The LA County Board of Supervisors declared a local state of emergency for homelessness. The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Secretary III vacancies related to homelessness.

The County is seeking qualified individuals to help address issues such as housing, mental health, and substance use. This is an opportunity to directly benefit the population of LA County. The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Secretary III vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. During the initial work period, performance will be assessed (weight 100%). Those who pass the assessment may be considered for permanent appointment to Senior Secretary III.

Essential Job Functions

  • Replies to both verbal and written communication.
  • Screens telephone calls, furnishes requested information, refers calls to others, and handles calls that do not require the supervisor’s attention.
  • Makes appointments, keeps calendar, and schedules conferences, meetings, and travel for the supervisor.
  • Acts as intermediary between supervisor and staff; transmits messages and requests; may act in the supervisor’s absence if authorized.
  • Acts as liaison between the supervisor’s office and other departments, agencies, and jurisdictions.
  • Prepares inter-office notices, bulletins, and memoranda, including interpretations of policy and regulations.
  • Gathers data for general information or special reports and may prepare reports for supervisor’s approval.
  • Checks materials for completeness and proper data, files, and signatures.
  • Relieves supervisor of routine personnel, budget, and operating details such as scheduling and timekeeping.
  • Keeps track of execution of plans and projects; recommends improvements in procedures.
  • Supervises lower-level clerical staff.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of highly responsible secretarial experience at the level of Los Angeles County’s class of Secretary III, Secretary IV, Senior Secretary I or Senior Secretary II.
  • OR two years of responsible secretarial experience at the level of Los Angeles County’s class of Secretary I or Secretary II.

You MUST meet the above requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

Licenses: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Physical Class: Physical Class II – Light: administrative and clerical positions with light physical effort; may include occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Other Requirements: Typing Rate: 40 net words per minute. Applicants must meet requirements at time of filing.

Typing Test Information: A qualifying typing performance test of 40 net words-per-minute will be administered to applicants who have not held a typing position in the County service. See details in the posting for exemptions and testing options.

Special and Additional Information

  • All classes in the Secretarial Group perform duties of essentially the same basic activities and operations.
