Responsibilities
Under general supervision, perform custodial work to keep assigned rooms, buildings and office space clean, neat and orderly. Examples of duties include: sweeping, scrubbing, mopping and waxing floors; vacuuming rugs and carpets; dusting, waxing, washing and polishing furniture and woodwork; emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; cleaning restrooms and showers; washing windows and walls; cleaning blackboards; cleaning drinking fountains; polishing metal work; moving and arranging furniture and equipment; setting up, opening and closing classrooms and facilities for community activities; replacing light bulbs and making minor non-technical repairs; cleaning venetian blinds; reporting needs for repairs; checking and storing materials; maintaining equipment used in the course of work; monitoring buildings during late shifts, turning out lights and locking doors/windows; opening buildings at the start of the workday; picking up paper and trash on grounds; operating and maintaining power cleaning equipment; may supervise student workers; may perform routine grounds keeping duties; may assist in surface preparation for painting and minor painting tasks; may drive motor vehicles.
Special requirements
Possession of an appropriate California operator’s license if required; maintain a driving record acceptable for district vehicle insurance programs.
Qualifications
Knowledge of: methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures; cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment; common tools and their use; safe work practices. Ability to: maintain assigned buildings and areas in a clean and orderly condition; use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency; perform heavy manual work; operate power cleaning equipment with skill and safety; understand and follow work schedules and directions; establish and maintain cooperative relationships. Training and experience: any combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge and abilities; typically one year of custodial, janitorial or related work experience.
Physical abilities
Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and repetitive arm and shoulder motions with moderate exertion. Occasional sitting, standing, squatting, climbing. Ability to climb ladders and lift materials or equipment up to 50 pounds frequently and carry up to 20 feet. Push, pull and maneuver loads over 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to operate floor polishers and carpet cleaning equipment. Visual acuity and depth perception to operate equipment and read safety materials. Hear, speak, read and write in English to exchange information, write work orders, read directions, and MSDS sheets.
