The R and D Senior Engineer is responsible for the design and/or development of new or modified products using methods of technical research, project planning/resourcing, material screening, experimental design (DOE), simulation and product transition to create sustainable and profitable product lines. They act as a technical liaison providing troubleshooting and technical support for projects related to the development of new products, materials, and designs. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. While we expect they exercise judgment within defined procedures of experiment, they also must be creative. This level engineer may be an expert in some specific areas. Must be able to work collaboratively with all other types of engineers and personnel.

Responsibilities

Align with other engineers to ensure process development and qualification. May present data on material, machines or process impacts in a variety of forums.

Coordinate and/or lead projects between lab, customer input, purchasing, prototype development and production. Strong project management skills ensure projects stay on task.

Participate in assessment, test and design review as well as create new, unique designs and concepts to meet internal/external needs.

Evaluate and provide baseline recommendations for designs based on package costs and performance trade-off.

May train other engineers and technicians on a variety of concepts. May be the department expert in one or more material areas. Should apply experience to develop other team members.

Train technician level personnel and associate engineers on set up, machine output, and may write process manuals or technique tools. May be asked to mentor one or more staff members.

Assist development engineers with process development and qualification.

Perform experiments and analyze results of a variety of variables. May collaborate with outside sources such as vendors, colleges, or auditors.

Generate own specific goals and prioritize workload so those actions are in alignment with department goals.

Strong presentation skills (material content and public speaking) to ensure understanding and support of departmental projects.

Qualifications

Requires BS degree in engineering; advanced degree is preferred.

Requires a minimum of 5+ years of related experience or its equivalent in education and experience.

Experience in the application of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization.

Familiarity with chemistry/materials science concepts to apply engineered solutions to process problems.

Familiar with customer/suppliers processes and thorough understanding of own process.

Troubleshooting aptitude on wide variety of lab equipment.

Ability to professionally present data, write project reports, and demonstrate high written and verbal communication skills.

Intermediate computer skills including Excel for data collection and graphical presentation of data.

Ability to work in a clean room environment and wear proper PPE.

Ability to work in a fast-paced lab environment and meet deadlines.

Travel may be required up to 10%
