Overview
Assistant Professor of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) – College of Education and Community Innovation (CECI) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank to begin in August 2026. We seek candidates with expertise in TESOL, ESOL, or ESL, and who can demonstrate professional and applied experiences with PreK-12 schools and community engagement. Candidates with demonstrated experience in social justice and/or inclusion initiatives/training are preferred. The open position is for an Assistant Professor, subject to funding approval. Primary Duties
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on and related to ESOL in both face-to-face and online modalities (three courses in the fall semester, three courses in the winter semester). Advise students in the teacher education program. Develop and maintain a scholarly research agenda. Provide service to the institution, community, and profession. Travel to all GVSU sites, including distance sites, for instruction as needed. Working hours may extend beyond the normal 8am–5pm weekday schedule. Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Ph.D., Ed. D., or ABD (with expected graduation by August 1, 2026) in TESOL, ESOL, ESL or in Teacher Education or a related field with a concentration in TESOL/ESOL/ESL. Demonstrated potential for university teaching in ESL assessment, teaching methods, educational research methods, socio-cultural or socio-linguistic aspects of teaching and learning, or teacher education. Positive record of experience in Pre-K-12 environments and/or higher education settings. Demonstrated understanding of and/or commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds. Effective oral, written, and collaborative interpersonal skills. Demonstrated qualities of a team player. Commitment to using various modalities of instruction including: face-to-face, online synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and distance learning technologies, and willingness to teach evenings and weekends. Strong background in culturally responsive teaching/pedagogy and understanding the challenges of teaching students from diverse backgrounds. Completion of doctoral studies. Evidence of student-centered and relationship-centered teaching. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with a reflective lens. Openness to new knowledge, information, and phenomena. Engagement with or interest in using varied pedagogies that consider multiple linguistic, cultural, and linguistic aspects. Evidence of an active research agenda. Evidence of collaborative endeavors with colleagues (e.g., research, teaching, curriculum development). Working Conditions
