Overview
Director - Public Safety and Compliance. Status: Full-time, Exempt. Department: Public Safety. Location: W.A. Lettinga Campus (Grand Rapids, Michigan). Reports to: Vice President-Facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring public safety and security across all Davenport University campuses with the primary emphasis on continuing and developing the University's cultural values and community standards. The director is expected to develop and maintain a team that serves as an approachable and supportive resource to students, staff, faculty and guests, promoting a welcoming, equitable and student-centered campus environment. The director has responsibilities related to university compliance as part of the compliance team, including the Annual Security Report (ASR) and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act, in alignment with the university’s mission, vision and values including diversity, equity and inclusion. Responsibilities
Manage safety & security activities of the campuses and ensure that public safety departmental objectives are achieved, including temporary coverage for shifts that require 24/7 staffing in some locations. Oversee the hiring, supervision, scheduling, evaluation, disciplinary action and professional development of public safety staff, collaborating with department leads/supervisors to understand and meet customer needs. Ensure effective administration of an incident reporting system for accuracy, efficiency and compliance with federal and state law and regulations, including reporting and compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act. Manage interdepartmental processes related to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure and Campus Crime Statistics Act to ensure accurate reporting and monitoring of federally required statistics. Ensure incident reports are generated to maintain responsiveness to customers and high departmental productivity. Serve as a member of the university Title IX team, providing support to the Title IX Coordinator and/or participating as an investigator or adviser or providing other overall support to the university population as needed. Manage a crisis management/emergency preparedness program, including teams, training and procedures; provide emergency response/preparedness training and communication at all locations; coordinate weather-related processes and mass notification programs. Develop and oversee Behavior Threat Assessment teams; coordinate with various departments on emergency preparedness drills; oversee preparation of the Annual Security Report (ASR). Advise on OSHA and MIOSHA regulations; participate in other university compliance initiatives as identified; ensure timely emergency messaging through the DU Alert system for Clery communications, weather and campus concerns. Develop, implement and ensure delivery of safety, security and crime prevention programs in collaboration with leadership, students, staff, and faculty. Manage all physical security aspects and systems (CCTV, entry alarms, keying, card access, mass alert systems, fire alarms); develop and manage department operating and routine capital budgets; maintain inventory of departmental supplies and equipment. Administer contracts and agreements with outside vendors and contractors; ensure collaboration and engagement with the campus community. Represent the University to local, state and federal agencies as needed; conduct regular campus visits to engage with teams, campus leaders, and student groups to understand needs and provide support. Demonstrate commitment to customer service and the University Cultural Values. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience. Demonstrated commitment to the success of a diverse student population. Minimum of three to five years of management experience, ideally including campus safety, security and emergency preparedness. Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation including criminal background check, employment and personal reference checks, pre-employment physical, drug/alcohol screening, psychological evaluation, DISC Personality Test. Skills in planning, organizing, budgeting, motivating and developing others; broad knowledge of university legal requirements and policies; experience with Title VII/IX investigations is a plus. Ability to investigate sensitive issues confidentially and present findings; willingness to obtain training, licensing or certifications to carry a firearm on duty if deemed appropriate by the University (currently not in place). Ability to work independently and as part of a team; meet deadlines and achieve goals; excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; ability to relate well to students, parents, faculty and staff while maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrated integrity, ethics and dedication to the university mission; ability to work irregular schedules, evenings or Saturdays; physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in crawl spaces and extreme temperatures; travel between campuses required.
