Overview

This position instructs middle school athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The employee must understand and abide by building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

Essential Job Functions

Supervises student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.

Plans, develops and implements an effective program for the sport to prepare athletes physically and mentally; sets behavioral objectives for the season; administers discipline fairly; emphasizes safety; provides opportunities for each participant to succeed; shares information with parents (rules, schedule, practice days and times); informs participants about district policies and the extracurricular activity contract.

Organizes practice sessions for 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week and 6th grade teams two days a week; teaches basic fundamental skills; prepares daily practice activities; keeps records; promotes good sportsmanship.

Coordinates facility use with the building athletic director; follows budgeting and equipment procedures; handles injuries per district procedures; maintains injury records with the athletic director.

Informs students and parents of eligibility procedures and sport-specific rules; posts rules and distributes them to participants.

Establishes an equipment issuance system; tracks issuance and return; conducts weekly safety checks; holds students responsible for lost equipment; maintains inventory.

Provides recommendations to the building athletic director regarding program, facilities and transportation; supports district athletic objectives.

Other Job Duties

Attends district and building athletic meetings as scheduled.

Updates knowledge by attending clinics and workshops; stays current with WIAA rule changes and Tacoma School District policies.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work with students on outdoor fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasiums and other sports facilities; ability to lift and move equipment; may be exposed to infectious diseases or inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation) or equivalent experience and training that meets requirements.

Allowable Substitution

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated for comparability.

Licenses/Special Requirements

First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.

Knowledge of building, district and WIAA policies; knowledge of coaching practices; ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards; ability to motivate students; fairness; ethical conduct; ability to maintain poise and adapt to varied athletic abilities; ability to establish and maintain relationships in a diverse setting; ability to plan and coordinate athletic activities; ability to maintain accurate records.
