Overview
Code Compliance Officer (Building Code Compliance/Construction) – City of Fort Lauderdale The Development Services Department's Building Services Division is seeking a Code Compliance Officer (Building Code/Construction). The Code Compliance Officer conducts inspection and enforcement work to secure compliance with laws, regulations and ordinances governing land use, minimum housing, property maintenance, abandoned and uninhabitable properties, signs, seawalls, storm water, zoning, landscaping and related environmental issues. This role may receive guidance from a supervisor on unusual or difficult inspections; most field work is performed independently and requires knowledge of applicable regulations. This position involves construction and other permitted sites duties such as ensuring silt and debris do not enter waterways or drainage systems; monitoring construction noise; checking for permits; and related tasks. In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, this open-competitive posting is considered both internal and external. This job is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Essential Job Functions
Conducts reactive (complaints) and proactive (self-initiated) field and waterway inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant parcels Enforces and reviews state, municipal, zoning, waterways, and building laws and regulations Prepares, organizes and maintains case files to present cases and testify at quasi-judicial hearings when needed Researches information regarding policies, laws, regulations, permits and building and zoning requirements Provides code information to address issues and educate concerned parties Posts violation notices Compiles and prepares written reports on investigations and maintains inspection results in a computerized case management environment Identifies structures that may be unsafe and initiates follow-up actions May be required to flex work schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays, as necessary Performs related duties as required Note:

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT Graduated from a standard high school or vocational school or possess a G.E.D. certificate At least two (2) years of paid work experience dealing with the public in one or more of the following: code enforcement, urban planning, building inspection, building permitting, construction or a closely related field Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days after hire Required certifications and license must be kept current to continue employment in this class If claiming Veteran's Preference, attach a DD214 Member 4 form and the City’s veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application Preferred Qualifications: Ability to accurately type 40 wpm As public servants, employees may be required to work before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads. Physical Standards
Required to perform essential job functions; the position involves medium physical demands including lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally, up to 20 lbs frequently, and up to 10 lbs constantly, with ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, grasp, stand and access heights or confined spaces.
