The Chief Development Officer (CDO) plays a critical role in driving the organization's growth and is responsible for leading growth strategies, fundraising, partnerships, and overall business development. The CDO reports to the Chief Executive Officer and aligns fundraising and development efforts with CHMO’s mission, vision, and long-term goals. About The Role
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a full-time position responsible for all aspects of successful fundraising and development, including strategy and planning, case for support, annual events and campaigns, individual giving, corporate and foundation grants, online and digital fundraisers, legacy gifts, donor research and prospecting, engagement and stewardship, marketing and communications, technology and data management, and compliance and ethics. The CDO leads growth strategies, fundraising, partnerships, and overall business development in partnership with the CEO. The CDO serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Fundraising Leadership and Revenue Generation Create Organizational Fundraising Strategy: Develop a detailed plan outlining fundraising methods (events, capital campaigns, online campaigns, community appeals, major gifts, stewardship, etc.), timelines, budget, resource allocation, and methods to guide the team. Set Clear Goals: Define specific, measurable financial targets with purpose and timelines aligned to CHMO’s needs. Building Relationships: Establish and cultivate long-term donor, foundation, and corporate sponsor relationships through stewardship and ongoing communication. Engage Stakeholders: Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, government agencies, investors, the board, staff, media, sponsors, and community partners. Ambassador: Represent CHMO at industry events; prepare and facilitate presentations to community groups, corporations, foundations, and civic organizations. Identify Target Donors: Understand and segment potential donors and determine strategies for approaching them. Donor Stewardship: Develop customized stewardship plans, recognize donors, provide updates on impact, and develop recognition programs. Grant Management: Oversee grant opportunities research, proposal writing, and funder reporting; ensure compliance with grant requirements. Evaluating Success: Track fundraising income/expenses, analyze data, and adjust strategies to improve future efforts; ensure legal and ethical standards. Event Planning and Campaigns: Organize and oversee fundraising events and campaigns with solid logistics, marketing, and volunteer involvement. Marketing and Outreach: Develop messaging and promotional materials across channels (local media, CHMO website, emails, social media, direct mail, annual report, impact report, newsletters). Organizational Leadership Strategic Leadership: Lead development strategy across grants, major gifts, online strategy, events, campaigns, marketing, budgeting, volunteer coordination, and fundraising growth. Participate in CHMO Board meetings. Make Critical Decisions: Use data-informed decisions and allocate resources to achieve objectives and KPIs. Growth-Mindset: Identify new opportunities for growth, partnerships, and revenue streams. Monitor and Report: Ensure grant compliance, develop monitoring/reporting protocols, track KPIs, and coordinate with programs for fundraising activities. Manage data for reporting to funders. Forecast: Identify needs and propose solutions with leadership. Collaboration: Partner with Covenant House International on federation initiatives, maintain relationships with stakeholders, and work with the board and committees to execute strategic plans. Financial Oversight & Fiduciary Responsibility: Manage budgets and expenses; provide budget analyses and financial forecasting for development activities. Time and Priorities: Prioritize initiatives and allocate resources to meet objectives. Utilization: Ensure maximum use of resources. Talent Leadership, Management & Development Hiring and Talent Development: Oversee talent acquisition, onboarding, development, supervision, training, and retention; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Empower Teams & Effective Communication: Foster collaboration and clear communication across departments and teams. Conflict Resolution Mentorship: Guide emerging leaders and align development transactions with strategic goals. Transparency Succession Planning Performance Excellence, Monitoring, Impact Evaluation, & Accountability Measure Success: Monitor KPIs, analyze data, and report on progress to inform decisions. Accountability Critical Thinking: Analyze trends and propose organizational improvements. Supervisory Duties
This position directly supervises the Director of Development, Volunteer & Community Relationship Coordinator, Donor Database and Stewardship Specialist, Grant Management Specialist, and Marketing and Communications Specialist. Working Relationships
Regular internal contact with CHMO staff, Board members, and vendors; external contact with outside agencies. Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree required in Marketing, Public Relations, Business Administration, Communications, Human Services or related field; Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of 10 years professional fundraising experience across multiple channels; at least 5 years in direct fundraising. Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing a team of at least three staff. Proven track record of soliciting six- and seven-figure gifts from individuals and institutions. Understanding of cross-team collaboration with Finance and Program. Experience supporting a CEO in fundraising; data-informed decision making. Comfort with federated organizational systems; public speaking and negotiation skills; experience leading cross-functional teams. Non-profit youth-serving or housing-focused leadership experience preferred; knowledge of mental health, trauma, substance abuse, homelessness, and poverty impact. Love of fundraising!
