Overview
Assistant Director of Immigration Policy (Advocacy, Legislative) at Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC. This role leads the development and execution of advocacy strategy to promote educational equity and related policy goals affecting Asian American communities. Responsibilities
Act as a thought partner to the VP of Policy and Programs on education policy, access, and inclusion initiatives. Provide leadership in budgeting, program goals, strategies, and innovative ideas aligned with AAJC’s mission and strategic plan. Mentor staff and foster collaboration across departments and with affiliates and external partners. Develop and implement strategies for education policy advocacy, including access and inclusion in related spaces. Engage with legislators and executive branch officials to advance laws, regulations, and policies that promote educational equity for Asian American communities. Conduct public policy research and analysis, monitor legislation and policy developments, and prepare testimony, comment letters, briefs, and memos. Collaborate with the Litigation team on education and inclusion policy issues that intersect with legal advocacy. Coordinate with Strategic Communications to create content, drafts for press, and public speaking appearances as requested. Manage external relationships and partnerships, including Community Partners Network and affiliates; develop community education materials and provide technical assistance to community-based organizations. Oversee subgrants related to education priorities and maintain relationships with subgrantees. Contribute to fundraising efforts and assist with donor communications and proposals related to education advocacy. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required; JD, Master’s Degree in Education Policy, or related advanced degree preferred. Eight+ years of relevant work experience in education, government, or advocacy organizations; management and supervisory experience preferred. Experience in education policy and its impact on Asian American communities; policy advocacy, campaigns, or field organizing experience preferred. Strong fundraising experience and donor relationship development preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate policy into accessible messaging. Proven ability to work in fast-paced environments, manage deadlines, and coordinate across teams and partners. Ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
