The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) promotes zero waste initiatives — including waste reduction, recycling, composting, and reuse — across University operations, departments and buildings. OWRR provides education and collection services and supports the University’s zero waste goals in alignment with NC statutes and executive orders. Position Summary
The Director of Facilities Operations Sustainability provides leadership for sustainability programs within Facilities Services and serves as the Manager of OWRR. Responsibilities include leading waste diversion and zero waste strategies, developing and managing multiple programs (environmental programs, sustainable building operations, ecologically sound maintenance, efficient transportation, waste reduction, recycling, compost, reuse, green chemical usage, and outreach). Collaborates with campus units and external groups to set programmatic and operational goals and ensures compliance toward zero waste and sustainable building operations. Responsibilities include supervision and direction for all OWRR programs and operations, coordination of waste management, education, program branding, behavior change, program expansion, development opportunities, and budget management. Develop new programs to maximize sustainable operations and engagement; support Sustainable Carolina initiative and other campus sustainability efforts; work with campus stakeholders to implement short- and long-term sustainability practices, including outreach and maintenance plans. This role provides interactive sustainability training to Facilities Operations across 24 Housekeeping zones (370 employees), 9 Groundskeeping zones (77 employees), and Building Services shops (217 employees). Training includes waste diversion, zero waste strategies, waste reduction, recycling, composting, and green chemical use. Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, with at least one year in a supervisory or lead role; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Solid working knowledge of sustainability, sustainable building operations, sustainable design, sustainable construction, waste management, recycling, and composting. Management/supervisory experience; ability to establish strategic goals, manage a budget; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong problem-solving and program development capabilities. Experience with sustainable management program design, operations, and implementation—specifically recycling, organics management, and reuse in a university setting. Experience with operations, maintenance, green products, integrated pest control, and site landscape in diverse settings (academic, administrative, research, housing, athletics, dining, etc.). Customer service orientation; accuracy in data handling, policy communication, and information tracking. Broad knowledge of operational sustainability issues and opportunities; experience implementing sustainability programs. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one before start date. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work during essential operations, including adverse weather or emergencies. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Progressive work in sustainability with coursework/experience in related fields (environmental studies, environmental sciences, communications, biology, ecology, architecture, planning, business, economics, public health/policy, etc.). Experience in college/university or state system. LEED Green Associate (GA) accreditation or ability to obtain within six months of hire. ISSP accreditation or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Experience with waste management program design in a university setting (recycling/compost). Ability to read architectural construction documents for sustainable building operations. Involvement in local/regional/national sustainability and waste industry organizations or trainings. APPA Institute, SWANA training, or equivalent leadership/training in sustainability. Familiarity with STARS or Sustainable Carolina framework. Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to move objects weighing up to 30 pounds; occasional physical tasks such as moving bins and carts; may assist with loading supplies for events or site setups. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
