Summary

Under limited supervision, performs skilled work at the journeyman level including set up and tear down, troubleshooting, and repairing large-scale industrial and commercial mechanical systems. Systems include compressors and air dryers, chillers, motors, pumps, piping and valves, cooling towers, heat exchangers, evaporative coolers, heaters, DX units, heat pumps, water treatment, exhaust systems, VAVs, electronic and pneumatic controls, ice makers, and other refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Working knowledge of building automation control systems (Metasys preferred) and sequence of operations. Perform preventative maintenance and repair of equipment, operate portable power equipment, and use mathematical formulas to determine tonnage and KW requirements. Must be able to work in a team environment that values customer service across multiple shop and administrative facilities. Directs the work of others in performance of job duties. Note: This is a multi-skilled position with secondary duties in Plumber, Electrician, and Instrument Technician roles.

What You'll Do

  • Uses hand and power tools, electrical test equipment, flow meters, thermometers and vacuum pumps to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heating and cooling system equipment, refrigeration units, duct heaters, exhaust fans, drinking fountains, ice makers, chillers, cooling towers, ventilators, air handlers, pumps, air compressors, heat exchangers, evaporative coolers, motors, VAVs, HVAC control systems, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Uses voltmeters, ohmmeters, ampmeters, porta powers, bench grinders, acetylene torches, gear pullers, megaprg gauges, rpm indicators, sling psychrometers, laser alignment tools, precision measuring tools, and other equipment in repair, maintenance, and installation activities.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and monitors the operation of central plant equipment including chillers, heat exchangers, cooling towers, pumps, and controls.
  • Monitors and adjusts HVAC equipment operation through the building automation system.
  • Troubleshoots and prepares sequence of operations for building automation system control of HVAC and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs all controls related to HVAC and mechanical equipment.
  • Reads installation drawings, schematic diagrams, manufacturer IOM manuals, troubleshooting guides, piping diagrams, and disassembly instructions.
  • Disassembles equipment and inspects component parts for maintenance, repair or replacement.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical equipment and plumbing systems.
  • Maintains safety of self and others.
  • Works effectively in a team environment.
  • Prepares accurate cost estimates and project schedules on multi-discipline jobs.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Work schedule includes rotating 2nd shift, on-call work, seasonal weekend shifts, occasional overtime, and occasional travel.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain safe and efficient performance; develop effective working relationships with coworkers, customers, and the public; interpret and carry out oral and written instructions; accurately complete applicable paperwork. May require overtime.

What It Takes To Succeed

Ability to work effectively in a team environment, perform with limited supervision, adapt to varying schedules and deadlines, and operate under emergency conditions. Basic understanding of job costs and ability to work within a budget.

Experience

Three to five years’ experience as Mechanic Plant. Three to five years’ experience as an O&M T/A-Mechanical. Three to five years’ experience with chilled water central plant as an HVAC Mechanic.

Testing and Certifications

Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.

Physical Agility Test and related training certifications: contact departmental manager for specifics.

Hybrid Workplace

SRP offers a hybrid workplace, with telework up to three days per week for eligible roles. Employees must live and work in Arizona.
