Responsibilities

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment.
  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures and furnishings.
  • Clean mirrors, interior glass surfaces and exterior glass as applicable.
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures.
  • Stock restroom supplies.
  • Dust venetian blinds and other surfaces as needed.
  • Spot wash walls to remove marks around sinks and light switches.
  • Clean patient bedside equipment.
  • Make beds and change linen.
  • Change or replace shower or cubical curtains.
  • Collect and transport waste materials to central location.
  • Report items in need of repair.
  • Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways; wet mop as needed.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions.
  • Open or lock buildings or rooms; turn on and off lights and equipment.
  • Replace burnt out incandescent light bulbs as needed.
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings.
  • Collect and transport soiled linen to central locations.
  • Clean assigned area, equipment and maintain clean environment.
  • Operate walk-behind cleaning equipment and touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Must not have any lifting restrictions.
  • Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting.
  • Must be a team player, able to prioritize work and handle stress daily.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week / Days / Tuesday-Saturday / 8:00am-4:30pm

Modes of Work

Some positions may be eligible for hybrid or remote work mode at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains all matters related to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing upon acceptance of a contingent job offer. Background screenings are performed in compliance with applicable laws.
