Job Summary

  • EWU is seeking self-motivated, independent workers for Custodian 1. Custodial Services maintains a safe, sanitary, and clean environment to enhance the campus learning environment. Duties include sanitation of restrooms, floor and window care, general cleaning of building interiors and surrounding areas, emptying garbage and recycling, and arranging furniture for campus events.
  • The salary is $41,844 (minimum) to $49,296, depending on education, experience, and skills. Responsibilities

  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools (buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washer, high speed buffers, vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee) for cleaning and maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture. May involve riding equipment where required.
  • Follow chemical and supplies instructions; perform cleaning and related activities within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment (e.g., snow removal, debris clearance, sweeping stairs).
  • Provide maid services in housing if required; assist in other areas when necessary.
  • Lock and unlock buildings; secure facilities when not in use; report unauthorized occupants; turn out lights.
  • Clean and restore floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; apply floor sealer/finish where needed.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and fixtures according to established practices; dust and wipe furniture; sweep/mop floors; empty waste/ recycle containers; replace light bulbs; refill dispensers.
  • Wash walls and equipment; use ladders as required; wash interior or accessible exterior windows; use appropriate cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Assist with setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events; move furniture and equipment as needed; process recycling.
  • Ensure safety and respond to established environmental and accessibility standards.

Qualifications

  • Required: Valid driver’s license; minimum age 18; high school diploma or GED; ability to learn custodial techniques; excellent customer service; team-oriented with flexibility; ability to work any shifts/days; ability to read/write/understand documents; responsive and flexible approach to student, faculty, staff, and public needs.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of custodial equipment operation; prior professional housekeeping or custodial experience; ability to work overtime/extended hours.

Conditions of Employment

  • Workdays and shifts may vary by need; schedules may be modified for operational purposes.
  • The position is physically demanding; a pre-placement physical may be required (EWU pays).
  • Lift up to 25 pounds frequently; carry up to 50 pounds occasionally; prolonged standing and walking; ability to climb stairs; frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, pulling, and pushing.
  • Position involves receipt of or accountability for university funds or items, and unsupervised access with vulnerable populations. Background check required. Immunization requirements apply unless waived for medical or religious reasons. Uniforms provided. Covered by WFSE CBA.

Salary Information

The salary range is $41,844 to $49,296, determined by education, experience, and skills.
