Job Summary
The swing shift custodial position involves cleaning and maintaining school facilities. Substitutes are called out by the substitute call-out system and locations of assignments vary by need. Responsibilities include mopping and vacuuming floors, operating scrubbing and polishing equipment, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, and replenishing supplies. Most substitute custodial work occurs on swing shift.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Sweeps and mops floors; strips and waxes floors periodically per schedule.
- Vacuums and periodically shampoos carpets.
- Straightens furniture in classrooms and offices; dusts flat surfaces; washes walls, desks, and windows as needed.
- Picks up waste papers; empties trash containers.
- Picks up litter and clothes in school locker rooms; sweeps and mops locker rooms and gymnasium floors where applicable.
- Sets up lunchroom tables and chairs; cleans and stores tables after lunch and stacks chairs.
- Cleans rest rooms; sweeps and mops floors; empties trash; washes mirrors and walls; sanitizes sinks, toilets, and urinals; replaces supplies and dispensers.
- Cleans whiteboards, trays and erasers; empties pencil sharpeners if assigned to a school building.
- Maintains current knowledge of firefighting equipment; reports fires and obtains emergency help.
- Performs minor repairs and general maintenance (doors, windows, light bulbs, painting).
- Communicates with staff and students during shift; responds to requests for repair, moving of furniture or supplies, or cleaning; sets up tables, chairs, and equipment for events.
- Ensures doors and windows are locked and building is secure before/after hours; verifies authorized visitors after hours.
- Uses cleaners, disinfectants, and finishes according to product directions.
- Maintains surrounding sidewalks and driveways clear of debris; assists with grounds as needed.
- Assists with after-school or evening activities; patrols building and parking areas; guides drivers to parking spaces.
- Provides backup for absent custodial staff; cleans and maintains designated areas as needed.
- Performs thorough summer cleaning; moves furniture, cleans walls, carpets, and equipment; waxes floors; performs minor repairs and dusts lights.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent or demonstrated strong reading, writing and communication skills.
- Custodial experience preferred.
- Experience in general light trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing or electrical preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of general cleaning procedures and safe use of cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to operate general custodial equipment.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and learn use of specialized cleaning equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to oversee building security; ability to follow schedules and respond to staff requests.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and up to 75 lbs infrequently (assist with heavier lifts as needed).
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and students; ability to work at extended heights.
Licenses / Special Requirements
- May be required to obtain CPR training and maintain First Aid certification.
- Upon employment or as soon as possible after hire, complete a safety awareness training program.
Clearances
- Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.
