Biological Scientist I - RNA virus-host interactions

Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL) | Work Type: Full Time

The Genoyer Lab is hiring a Biological Scientist I to perform research related to RNA virology and innate antiviral immunity. The Genoyer Lab opens in January 2026 and will study how viral RNA localization impacts infection and innate immunity during RNA virus infection, with a focus on flaviviruses. The candidate will help launch and contribute to the research program.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform experiments related to virology, molecular biology, and cell biology.
  • Apply experimental approaches including cell culture, viral infection and related assays, molecular biology assays (nucleic acid isolation, PCR, western blot, molecular cloning), RNA imaging techniques, immunofluorescence assays, and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Conduct general laboratory maintenance: ordering, inventory, routine record keeping, maintaining stock solutions, equipment maintenance, and supervising compliance with hazardous waste and biological safety requirements.
  • Design, implement, and conduct laboratory protocols and experiments; provide technical assistance to ongoing projects.
  • Analyze data and prepare results for presentation at lab meetings, research meetings, and publications in scientific journals; independently troubleshoot problems.
  • Supervise OPS lab helper(s).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related life science field; no experience required.
  • Preferred (BioSci I): Bachelor's degree in microbiology/immunology or related coursework; knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, RNA/DNA isolation, immunofluorescence); experience in mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique and/or working with infectious samples; strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by scientific writing/presentation (may be through coursework).
  • Note: The previously listed “Bio Sci II” qualifications were not applicable for BioSci I; the above reflect BioSci I expectations.

Compensation

Expected Salary: $19.15 - $25.19 hourly, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related life science field; no experience required.
