These positions report to the Social Work Service of the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System and cover clinical and other patient care areas within the Healthcare System.
Responsibilities
- Provide case-appropriate professional social work services for Veterans and families/significant others in compliance with VA, VISN, station, and Social Work policies and memorandums.
- Utilize casework, group work, case management, and/or community organization methods in service delivery; deliver highly developed professional social work services.
- Independently perform case finding, outreach, and screening for psychosocial needs.
- Possess knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities and provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups in outpatient settings.
- Work with patients and families experiencing emotional, medical, and social problems using individual, group, and family counseling skills.
- Assess psychosocial functioning and needs, formulate and implement treatment plans, and identify problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and needed assistance.
- Organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and evaluate program areas; manage cases with a wide range of social, emotional, and environmental issues.
Duties by Program
- Social Worker-Healthcare for Homeless Veterans (HCHV): provide continuity of care for homeless Veterans between VA and community-based programs, facilitating transitions to CRS, RRTPs, GPD, HUD-VASH, SSVF, or other community housing.
- Social Worker-HUD-VASH: intensive clinical case management for homeless Veterans, providing psychosocial services within housing through HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher system.
- Social Worker-PAT: assist in transforming Veteran care with patient-driven, team-based care focused on wellness, prevention, satisfaction, outcomes, and cost.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Subject to background/security investigation.
- Online onboarding required; acceptable identification documents as specified. Effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID-compliant ID required.
- Must pass pre-employment physical examination and participate in seasonal influenza vaccination program for VA Health Care Personnel.
Qualifications and Education
- Education: Master’s degree in social work from an accredited School of Social Work (CSWE). A doctoral degree may not substitute for the MSW.
- Licensure: For GS-0185 social workers, licensed or certified to independently practice at the master’s level. See qualification standards for details, including exceptions at GS-9 and GS-11 levels.
- If not licensed at appointment, a plan and timeline for licensure may be provided; requirements vary by grade level.
Grade and Experience
- GS-09 (Entry): Basic requirements; no post-MSW experience required beyond basic licensure.)
- GS-11 (Full-Performance): One year of post-MSW experience at the GS-9 level and licensure, or a doctoral degree in social work in lieu of one year of experience.
