Supporting independence and community inclusion, S:US’ Treatment Services division promotes person-centered services that focus on recovery. Engagement: Create a sense of community through the mutual sharing of lived experiences. Establish and maintain professional boundaries when working with participants. Maintain a caseload. Supervise peer specialist. Facilitate engagement with teams by forging strong connections with participants and families. Undertake outreach activities designed to promote community awareness of S:US services. Encourage help-seeking, and act as a bridge between team members and participants when ambivalence about treatment or other services exists. Develop authentic, meaningful relationships with individuals and families through empathy, listening and collaboration with genuine curiosity and interest. Understand, share and discuss multiple frameworks for understanding life experiences with participants and the S:US team. Peer Specialists intentionally use language in the service of listening to understand and make space for complex personal stories of recovery and resilience. Advocacy and Support
Advocates for and facilitates access to needed health care services, addressing barriers such as missed appointments, transportation, fear and stigma, and communication with professional staff. Advocate with and for program participants in the larger community and on the team. Facilitate individual and group-based educational, recovery, wellness and skill-building opportunities including: wellness self-management; WRAP; peer support; harm reduction; and other social or leisure activities. Collaborate with participants to clarify their personal visions and develop their wellness toolkit. Support
Support participants in strengthening self-awareness, building life skills, and connecting to resources and community outside of the S:US team. Work within the team to foster an environment that believes in human potential and values diversity. Accompany individuals to appointments and community/leisure activities. Carry a small caseload, as needed. Pre-Crisis and Crisis Support
Provide reassurance and support to individuals in distress or crisis. Provide non-clinical crisis support, especially after periods of hospitalization or incarceration. Assist individuals with implementing wellness, crisis plans or recovery plans. Accompany, support, and advocate for individuals in emergency rooms or crisis units or as they prepare for admission to detox, residential or other services to address crisis. Provide short-term post-crisis support to individuals discharged from emergency rooms, crisis units, crisis respite residences, or incarceration. Communication
Maintain open and frequent communication with the team; report safety and other concerns as required by policy. Ensure timely and accurate documentation of interactions, services provided, critical information and events, contacts with collaterals and referrals as required. Actively participate in agency and staff meetings, supervision, coaching and professional development. Attend required trainings and maintain confidentiality. Perform other duties as required. Community Participation
Utilize shared personal experience to support skill development toward independent living in the community. Explore community spaces that promote integration, inclusion, and participation. Support individuals in attending community activities and appointments when requested. Assist individuals to connect to long-term natural supports that enhance quality and stability of life. III. Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and team members, respecting diverse backgrounds. Integrity: Uphold ethics and values, respecting the culture and beliefs of individuals served. Person-Centered: Support independence and autonomy, providing support aligned to the person’s needs. Continuous Quality Improvement: Foster a culture of ongoing improvement and problem solving. Engagement: Use interpersonal skills to reduce barriers and stigma; involve care managers as appropriate. Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Certification or Provisional certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) OASAS and/or OMH/CRPA certification. Active participation in self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, or participant-run organizations or similar experiences. Lived experience with the Mental Health and/or Substance Use Treatment system and willingness to share personal experience appropriately and respectfully. Understanding of the community in which the team is based, with awareness of available resources. Experience working with families and youth/children. The Peer Specialist should have made positive progress toward their own recovery. Good interpersonal and empathetic communication skills; ability to work with participants and set boundaries. Willingness to disclose recovery story when appropriate for empowerment. Strong judgment and boundary-setting abilities. Understanding of community diversity and needs. Ability to document with a trauma-informed, culturally competent lens. Ability to use critical thinking, problem-solving and de-escalation skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Bi-lingual a plus. Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent or higher. Company Overview
