Overview The Major Gifts Officer will focus on prospecting, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of individual donors capable of making gifts of $5,000 or more to support the mission and operations of Honolulu Civil Beat. The ideal candidate will have major donor fundraising experience in Hawaii and play a key role in advancing the newsroom’s editorial expansion on the neighbor islands.

This position will be based in Hawaii and is a vital member of the revenue team that reports to the Director of Philanthropy.

Expectations

Revenue Generation

Secure a minimum of $100,000 in new major gift revenue in Year 1.

Increase average gift size and overall revenue across portfolios year over year.

Donor Acquisition and Stewardship

Manage major donor acquisition, renewals and upgrades in coordination with the Director of Philanthropy and Individual Support Manager.

Provide personalized solicitations that inform major donors of the impact of their gift, upcoming projects and events, and acknowledgement of their support.

Build long-term relationships with major donors, ensuring a deep understanding of their interests and motivations.

Work closely with the revenue team to align major gift strategy with individual grassroots support, institutional and planned gift efforts.

Portfolio Management

Develop and manage a robust pipeline of major gift donors and prospects.

Identify donors for immediate increased giving potential as well as long-term planned giving potential.

Craft individual action plans for prospects.

Accurately record prospect research and touchpoints to maximize use of Salesforce.

Events and Travel

Participate in the planning and execution of donor acquisition and stewardship events throughout the state.

Partner with revenue and event staff to maximize donor presence and engagement at events.

Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications Desired Qualifications:

At least five years in major gifts fundraising and:

Proven track record of achieving financial goals.

Exceptional ability to manage, cultivate and grow a portfolio of donors.

Experience with fundraising database systems. Knowledge of Salesforce CRM a plus.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment.

Capable of working on some evenings and weekends as needed.

Understanding of local news media and nonprofit organizations preferred.

Experience with planned giving a plus.
