The Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology will report directly to Charles (Charly) Lockwood, MD, MHCM, Executive Vice President of USF Health, Dean USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

The Opportunity The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM), in collaboration with Tampa General Hospital (TGH) as part of the integrated USF - TGH Academic Health System, is seeking a distinguished and dynamic individual to serve as the Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology. This position also includes the role of Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at Tampa General Hospital. The next Chair will have an extraordinary opportunity to take an already strong Department through a phase of growth, focusing on clinical, academic, and educational missions.

The Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology will be responsible for fostering a culture of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The successful candidate will have a strong pedigree, record of excellence, possess great communication skills, and be committed to providing exceptional patient experiences. This role requires a visionary leader who will drive the department's strategic initiatives and enhance its national standing.

The ideal candidate will be eligible to be a Full Professor in the medical school, hold a national reputation in Radiation Oncology and possess proven leadership skills in academic medicine. Furthermore, the Chair must mentor and cultivate faculty, providers, trainees, and work in a highly collaborative cancer institute environment at TGH.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and oversight for the Department of Radiation Oncology, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, research, education, and faculty development.

Serve as the Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at Tampa General Hospital, overseeing clinical operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the department's mission and goals.

Map and execute the next phases of the Department’s growth.

Foster a collaborative and culture of belonging that promotes innovation and excellence in patient care, research, and education.

Mentor and support faculty, providers, staff, and trainees, promoting their professional development and success.

Promote the recruitment, management, professional development, and retention of faculty and staff with wide-ranging perspectives and life experiences. Build an atmosphere of collegiality and openness.

Lead and participate in large-scale cancer clinical trials and NIH-funded investigations, and have extensive experience drawn from previous work in an NCI-funded cancer center environment.

Define the Department’s research strategy, emphasizing deliberate investment into research activities and priorities.

Shape eminent clinical programs and champion technologies to enhance the care team.

Ensure ethical medical and financial practices across the Department, supporting compliance requirements.

Expand and strengthen collaborative opportunities and bridges across the institution as well with community professionals.

The Candidate Experience and Professional Qualifications

MD or equivalent degree with board certification in Radiation Oncology.

Full Professor with a national reputation in Radiation Oncology.

Experience as a Division Head/Chief, Vice Chair, or Chair of Radiation Oncology.

Substantial experience as a faculty member in a distinguished academic or comparable medical setting. An established record of effective, strong, and collaborative leadership.

Outstanding personal academic accomplishments in Radiation Oncology and the experience and national reputation necessary to build the prominence of the Department’s research, clinical, and educational missions.

Proven leadership skills in academic medicine, with experience in leading, managing, and developing a high performing multidisciplinary team.

Demonstrated experience with large-scale cancer clinical trials and NIH-funded investigation.

Experience working in an NCI-funded cancer center environment is strongly preferred.

Ability to actively seek opportunities to develop cross-departmental collaboration on programs and initiatives.

Proven record of developing academic leaders and mentoring junior faculty while identifying and recruiting students, trainees, staff, and faculty with wide-ranging perspectives and life experiences.

Strong commitment to clinical excellence, research, and education.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collegial relationships with peers, faculty, departmental staff, hospital administration, students, other learners, and representatives of outside organizations and community stakeholders.

Ability to formulate and articulate a shared vision, to persuade a wide range of audiences of its value, and to engage others in its implementation.

Enables their team and supplies them with vision and resources, creating an environment where the team can work at their full potential.

Exhibits a style that supports change and innovation, with an ability to delegate yet maintain overall control.

Demonstrated financial and business acumen, with knowledge of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and healthcare delivery organizations.

Ability to navigate the multiple and oftentimes competing priorities of the tripartite education, research, and service missions of a complex academic medical center.

Solid vision for building a top-ranked Department of Radiation Oncology.
