Camera Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer
Apple Inc., San Diego, California, United States, 92189
Camera Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer
The Technology Calibration & Test group is responsible for developing methodologies and instrumentation for calibration and validation of key hardware components across Apple’s products. The camera team is looking for an expert calibration & instrumentation engineer to own the effort of characterizing and qualifying new camera modules along with their integration into the system, to enable critical features and offer the best customer experience. Description
As a Camera Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer, you will define calibration and test requirements for camera components in close collaboration with system and design teams. You will design and develop metrology solutions that meet those requirements — using simulation to validate performance, verifying results through laboratory characterization, and deploying scalable solutions into factory production. The ideal candidate combines a strong understanding of imaging system test design with hands-on software experience — using C / C++ / Objective-C for image processing and algorithm development, and Python / Lua for test sequencing, automation, and data analysis. Responsibilities
Design and validate calibration and test metrology through simulation, laboratory prototypes, and factory integration. Develop image processing and computer vision algorithms in C/C++/Objective-C to support calibration and metrology pipelines. Define performance metrics and spec limits, and evaluate their sensitivity to individual parameter accuracy. Define the end-to-end error budget to deliver critical features and user experience, including the capability and uncertainty of each individual hardware component. Establish specifications and tolerances for key components and qualify equipment vendors to meet quality control requirements. Design and develop new optical instruments or adapt existing instruments for customized application. Design, develop, and validate chart artwork optimized for algorithm performance and hardware constraints. Leverage simulation tools to generate synthetic datasets and evaluate edge-case behavior for metrology adaptability. Validate and analyze factory calibration and test performance, summarizing key trends and insights. Analyze build data for failure mode and GRR analysis, crafting experiments to root-cause performance issues and propose corrective actions. Optimize calibration and test methodologies to achieve mass production efficiency targets. Minimum Qualifications
BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field, with 3+ years of relevant industry experience Strong programming skills in C, C++, Objective-C, or Python Knowledge of sensor calibration principles, image processing, optical instrumentation, or camera modeling Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a cross-functional team environment Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with phenomenal attention to detail Preferred Qualifications
MS or PhD degree in a related technical field Hands-on experience with camera, depth, or IMU hardware components Proficiency in C/C++/Objective-C for image processing, camera calibration, or computer vision Proficiency in Python/Lua for test sequencing, automation, and data analysis Experience developing metrology systems or custom test instrumentation Familiarity with simulation workflows and synthetic dataset generation for algorithm validation Experience applying AI, data mining, and machine learning techniques to calibration or test analysis At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this role is between $134,800 and $245,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You’ll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses — including tuition. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation. Learn more about Apple Benefits.
