Overview Sports Instructor (Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA) – YMCA of Greater New York
Part-Time / Regular | $30.00 - $50.00 Hourly
The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA is seeking a Sports Instructor who will work with children/teens to promote the enjoyment of sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. This role supports the Y’s mission to empower youth, improve health, and strengthen the community.
Responsibilities
Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with participants and parents/guardians.
Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
Encourage lifelong participation in sports and physical activity.
Embody the YMCA Core Values.
Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
Create a written, age-appropriate, and progressive lesson plan for the program session.
Provide supervision of participants in line with YMCA standards (ratio, attendance, etc.).
Modify lesson plans/instruction to meet participant needs.
Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship; teach rules and fundamentals; enhance basic skills.
Communicate with parents/guardians about progress, registration for next session, and additional YMCA opportunities.
Ensure all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in good condition; conduct monthly safety checks.
Lead program promotion and recruitment efforts with the Supervisor.
Direct volunteers or Sports Assistants when applicable.
Know and act according to branch emergency procedures; maintain program space cleanliness.
Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) of incident reports; participate in meetings, training, and events.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.
Knowledge of youth development stages.
Content expert in designated sports activity.
Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
Current First Aid/CPR certifications.
Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of employment.
Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of employment.
