The CEO serves as the visible and inspirational leader of one of America’s largest charities, aligned with the Board of Directors. The Chief Executive Officer leads the development and execution of Feeding America’s strategy to ensure neighbors across the country have more pathways to sustained food and nutrition security. The CEO is responsible for leading and building a team of approximately 390 employees and fostering an open, inclusive culture centered on people facing hunger. The CEO oversees a $350 million budget that supports a $5.15 billion organization, and steers relationships with neighbors facing food insecurity, donors, legislators, and the Feeding America network of partner food banks, state associations, affiliate food banks, and 60,000 agencies nationwide. Key Responsibilities

Provide Visible and Inspirational Leadership for Feeding America and the Mission

Serve as the chief advocate for Feeding America and its nationwide network; act as a spokesperson and influencer on a broad range of issues. Demonstrate visionary leadership with a clear value proposition to the network, partners, media, donors, government and others.

Cast Vision, Develop Strategy, Oversee Operations, and Deliver Results

Translate vision and mission into tangible strategic plans and cultural expectations. Drive disciplined execution with accountability for performance, oversight, and outcomes. Oversee refinement and implementation of the 2030 strategy in alignment with the Strategic Framework developed with neighbors and network partners. Work with the Board and Executive Team to set long-term and annual strategic and funding priorities with measurable objectives; oversee program evaluation and data analysis to track progress and optimize impact. Maintain financial integrity and operational excellence, ensuring proper staffing of the national organization to achieve goals.

Unite and Catalyze Stakeholders

Develop and maintain strategic alliances with key stakeholders including neighbors, government, corporations, community-based organizations, and academia. Cultivate relationships within the Feeding America network to drive alignment with the mission while respecting the autonomy of a federated network. Maintain open, two-way communication with the National Council and leadership of partner food banks and state associations. Develop a broad fundraising strategy across individuals, corporations, and foundations; cultivate major donors and participate in solicitation. Maintain strong relationships with government agencies and food donors providing key resources. Oversee efforts to increase brand awareness among existing constituents and those less familiar with Feeding America’s work.

Build the Feeding America National Organization Team, Culture and Capabilities

Construct a streamlined organizational structure that attracts diverse talent and ensures the right people are in the right roles. Establish an inclusive and accountable culture centered on people facing hunger; develop internal standards and processes to enable success. Foster an empowered environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and responsible risk-taking while managing overall risk. Provide leadership for staff and network members.

Partner and Collaborate with the Board of Directors

Serve as the primary link to the Board of Directors, advising on operations and governance; support policy development. Establish effective two-way communications and seek input from Board members to leverage their experience.

The Candidate

Professional Experience and Qualifications Deep and authentic passion for the mission; a fierce advocate for Feeding America and addressing food insecurity. Minimum of 15 years of executive leadership experience at large, complex, geographically dispersed organizations, preferably in relevant sectors such as food systems, public health, social services, or large federated networks. Experience aligning independent affiliates behind a national strategy and working with diverse stakeholders on strategic planning. Track record of executing strategy with urgency, achieving goals, and driving results with metrics and accountability. Direct P&L or fiduciary accountability for a nationally scaled budget. Experience in systems-level change and policy influence with credibility in government and philanthropy; bipartisan approach preferred. Spokesperson experience with diverse audiences including government officials, donors, media, and the public. Executive presence to inspire, motivate, build trust, and bridge differences. Ability to motivate, empower, and grow staff through recruiting and development. High emotional intelligence, empathy, humility, inclusivity, and accountability. Experience convening diverse stakeholders and developing coordinated strategies. Track record of generating new revenue sources and managing major funding relationships within a constrained operating budget. Strong risk management experience. Additional Desired Competencies
