Overview

This position serves as the Outpatient Mental Health Nurse for VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS). The 2-page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. For more information, refer to Required Documents below.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Outpatient Mental Health Nurse duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provides assessment for Veteran safety including suicidal thoughts and serious mental illness.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and reporting of mental health treatment needs of Veterans.
  • Addresses thoughts of self-harm or harm to others and, if necessary, per policy, completes a legal hold to assure critical mental health needs are met.
  • Contributes to the quality and timely delivery of outcomes in support of the Veterans.
  • Participates in processes that result in the facility meeting measurable outcomes to support the vision, mission, and goals of the organization and service.
  • Assists Veterans in identifying their own treatment goals and coordinates their care to achieve those goals.
  • Utilizes multiple computer and technology-based applications and programs to access, analyze, and report data related to patient care.
  • Supports the service and drive for Behavioral Health SAIL excellence.
  • Respects and protects patients' rights in a patient advocate role.
  • Demonstrates ethical care for Veterans and staff in addressing ethical issues.
  • Provides leadership when working with an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care.
  • Supports the management of resources (financial, human, material, and/or informational) of a complex program or service in a manner which applies professional standards of practice for effective, efficient outcomes.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications

  • Basic Requirements:
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE; OR individuals in a master's level bridge program may be considered as described in VA Handbook provisions.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who meet basic education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade as a GNT for up to 120 days (may be extended up to two years) while pursuing licensure.
  • Note: Grandfathering Provision - Employees in 0610 series on the effective date of the standard are considered to have met qualifications.
