Overview
Join us as an Electrician for the City of West Allis. The role involves maintaining, inspecting, and repairing electrical wiring systems and equipment, with responsibilities including street lighting, lighting services in parks, playgrounds, and parking lots, lighting for public services and buildings, and installing and maintaining the traffic control system throughout the city.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, inspect, repair electrical wiring systems and equipment.
- Manage street lighting and lighting for parks, playgrounds, parking lots, public services, and buildings.
- Install and maintain the traffic control system throughout the city.
- Install, modify, repair, test, and load electrical systems and components (wiring, circuits, outlets, fixtures, switches, panels, transformers, and related devices) to ensure safe operation.
- Test, repair, or replace worn components (motors, generators, batteries, timing devices); perform preventive maintenance (inspection, cleaning, oiling, adjustments) and locate underground cables (Diggers Hotline network).
- Troubleshoot low- and high-voltage issues; locate shorts, opens, grounds, capacitance imbalances, or cable breaks using appropriate instruments.
- String and pull wires, install and pull cables underground, splice and connect wires, and repair/replace streetlight poles, bases, and luminaires.
- Maintain and replace beacon lights on City water towers; inspect transformers, switches, and transformer oil; check voltage and supervise primary/secondary connections.
- Maintain low-voltage control cabinets, replace breakers, repair contractors, and maintain time clocks.
- Interpret building plans, blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, and maintenance manuals to plan electrical layouts; suggest improvements to procedures to enhance efficiency.
- Attend work regularly, communicate clearly, travel within the jurisdiction, drive city vehicles lawfully, and perform other assigned duties.
Qualifications
- High school or trade school graduate (or equivalent) with completed electrical apprenticeship and at least five years of recent paid experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience (journey-level electrician).
- Knowledge of electrical practices, materials, tools, safety protocols, codes, standards, and hazard prevention.
- Ability to read blueprints/diagrams and estimate small project costs; proficient with standard hand tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to multitask in fast-paced environments; quick learner of specialized software and databases; proficient with computers and mobile devices (e.g., iPad).
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and near traffic.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License with acceptable driving record (per City Policy).
- Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Class B or C with air brakes and Tanker (N) Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
- Electrician Level I: Journeyman Certification or Industrial Journeyman Electrician Certificate (Wisconsin DSPS) with up to 3 years of experience.
- Electrician Level II: Master Electrician Certification (Wisconsin) with at least 3 years of experience.
Work Schedule & Environment
- Available to work nights, weekends, occasional overtime, and odd hours during emergencies; participate in rotational watch duty when assigned.
- Local travel within West Allis; outdoor work in various weather conditions; travel across properties within the jurisdiction.
