Unknown Worlds Entertainment
Senior IT Systems Engineer
Unknown Worlds Entertainment, San Ramon, California, United States, 94583
Overview
Striking Distance Studios (SDS) & the Unknown Worlds (UW) IT Operations team provide centralized, Studio-level IT services for both SDS and UW. Our team delivers day-to-day employee support, infrastructure design, cloud operations, security / compliance, and specialized game-development tooling support (Perforce, Unreal Engine). This role lives at the intersection of operations and projects: you'll be hands-on with incident response and ticketing while owning medium-to-large projects that standardize and harden UW into Krafton's environment. Expect a fast-moving, collaborative team supporting ~180 users across multiple time zones, close partnership with Dev and QA, and ownership of critical launch-window reliability work. This is a hybrid role based out of San Ramon, CA.
Responsibilities
Design, deploy, and operate servers, storage, and network infrastructure for on-prem and cloud (AWS/Azure) environments.
Configure and maintain Palo Alto and Meraki security and routing, including VLAN design, firewall rules, and VPNs.
Manage identity and access: Active Directory, Okta/OneLogin integrations, SSO, and group policy.
Act as primary escalation for incidents (system outages, build farm problems, network/security incidents); run incident postmortems and remediation.
Implement system hardening, vulnerability assessment, and compliance controls (CIS baselines, patching cadence, AV/EDR management).
Automate common ops tasks using PowerShell/Python and maintain runbooks and CI for infrastructure automation.
Support game-dev toolchain: Perforce administration, Unreal Engine environment stability, build server optimization.
Drive change management, documentation, and internal training to raise team capacity and reduce single points of failure.
Qualifications
Minimum 6 years of IT systems engineering and operations; 8+ years preferred.
Hands-on administration: Windows 11, Windows Server, Linux, and macOS.
Deep experience with Palo Alto firewalls and Cisco/Meraki networking.
Strong Active Directory and identity management (Okta/Azure AD) skills.
Proven AWS and/or Azure architecture and operational experience.
Virtualization experience (VMware or Hyper-V).
Scripting/automation using PowerShell and Python.
MDM experience (Intune, Jamf, SCCM).
Practical Perforce administration and familiarity with Unreal Engine build/workflows.
Solid networking fundamentals: DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, subnets.
Experience with ITSM/ITIL processes, incident/change management, and runbook creation.
Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-team communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Certifications (preferred, not required): AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or AWS Solutions Architect/Associate; Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate; CompTIA Security+ or Network+; Jamf Certified Associate or Jamf Certified Admin; Okta Administrator/Okta Certified Professional. (expired certifications acceptable)
Prior experience supporting studio M&A integrations, multi-studio shared services, or large device refresh programs.
Familiarity with EDR/endpoint tools (SentinelOne, CrowdStrike) and basic vulnerability scanning/management tools.
Demonstrated experience automating repetitive ops tasks using PowerShell, Python, or automation tooling to reduce manual effort.
Comfortable supporting remote and international users and coordinating with HQ/Korean stakeholders.
Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and process-improvement track record.
