Sr Tax Manager - Credits, Incentives, and Planning
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Sr. Manager of Tax Credits, Incentives & Planning to lead our efforts in identifying, securing, and managing C&I opportunities across jurisdictions where BJ’s operates or plans to expand. Reporting directly to the VP of Tax, this high-impact role offers a unique opportunity to work cross-functionally with teams including Real Estate, Tax, Legal, Finance and Operations to bring structure and visibility to a function that optimizes BJ’s financial position. The ideal candidate brings strategic thinking, hands-on execution, and the communication skills needed to capitalize on C&I opportunities effectively.
Responsibilities
Strategy, Planning & Program Leadership: Research and assess eligibility for C&I programs to reduce capital costs and minimize tax obligations across BJ’s expanding jurisdictional footprint.
Manage BJ’s external C&I advisors currently leading negotiations, with a long-term goal of transitioning this function in-house.
Identify and implement tools, systems, and best practices to streamline C&I tracking, documentation, and compliance.
Act as the company-wide subject matter expert on C&I.
Application Management and Compliance: Oversee the full lifecycle of C&I including identification, application, documentation, calculation, monetization, and reporting to ensure compliance with relevant laws and accounting standards (e.g., ASC 740).
Maintain a compliance calendar of C&I deadlines and reporting cycles, and monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations related to C&I programs.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: Create and maintain a centralized pipeline of available and in-progress C&I opportunities. Provide regular updates to senior leadership on captured value, pending applications, and emerging risks.
Collaborate with external consultants and internal teams including Real Estate, Legal, Finance, and Operations to align C&I efforts with business strategy, build early visibility into eligible projects, educate stakeholders on available incentives, and coordinate data collection for timely filings and compliance reporting.
Reporting and Audit Readiness: Quantify and report secured and missed C&I opportunities. Prepare audit-ready documentation for internal and external reviews. Coordinate with external advisors and provide technical support to sustain BJ’s positions during audits or inquiries. Recommend process improvements and technology enhancements for better C&I capture and compliance.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of experience in tax credits and incentives, economic development, public finance, corporate tax, or real estate development.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Real Estate, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP or Oracle) and tax software (e.g., OneSource) is a plus.
Technical Skills
Excellent research skills to navigate complicated regulatory frameworks and apply findings to support business needs.
Advanced analytical skills to examine complex financial data, identify and evaluate potential C&I opportunities, and resolve nuanced issues.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey intricate C&I concepts to internal stakeholders at all levels in a clear and concise manner.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and coordinate cross-functional inputs.
Comfortable navigating a constantly evolving landscape of tax laws and business needs; proactive in identifying risks and coordinating solutions.
Meticulous attention to detail and high level of accuracy in preparing tax filings, performing calculations, and preparing documentation.
Strong knowledge of corporate tax laws and working familiarity with C&I programs across jurisdictions, with the ability to deepen expertise quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA, JD/LLM, or relevant master’s degree (e.g., Taxation, Public Policy, Finance).
Additional certifications such as Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), Project Management Professional (PMP), or other credentials related to public finance or economic development.
Experience managing incentives, compliance reporting, negotiating or working with economic development agencies.
This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.
In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. The pay range for this position starts from $125,500.00. Actual salaries will vary depending on location, education, experience, and qualifications.
