User Interface (UI) / Visual Information Designer – Research, Illustration, and Innovation
Charles River Analytics is an employee-owned company that creates solutions and technology to tackle challenging problems in AI, robotics, smart sensing, and human-centered computing. We are looking for a passionate UI Designer with strong graphic design and illustration skills, experience in research-driven design, and the ability to illustrate UI concepts and communicate design decisions grounded in human factors and usability.
In this role, you will work with small teams of research scientists and software engineers to design innovative interfaces as part of a user-centered design process. You will move from early research wireframes to high-fidelity design concepts and support development into functional software systems. You will determine design requirements, iterate novel interaction approaches, and help implement these designs in live software systems. You will support evaluation of research ideas throughout the systems engineering process and communicate outcomes to stakeholders, clients, and end users through concept illustrations, briefings, prototypes, and videos.
Responsibilities
Understand requirements and conceptualize new user interfaces and interactive data visualizations with clear, balanced UI elements
Illustrate and articulate design ideas using wireframes, storyboards, high-fidelity mockups, and final graphics
Contribute to design assets and visual patterns; rapidly iterate concepts and prototypes
Deliver prototypes and communicate functions and requirements to describe interactions
Capture and develop process artifacts; present design concepts visually to product teams, customers, and end users
Maintain and extend design systems and libraries to support the team
Present design rationale through written, visual, and verbal means to project teams and clients
Collaborate with software engineers to deploy envisioned technology solutions
What you’ll need
Degree in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Interaction Design, Cognitive Systems Engineering, or related field, or strong track record conducting user research and developing effective UIs
Ability to turn early sketches and wireframes into high-fidelity interface mockups and develop supporting visuals (storyboards, graphics, etc.)
Excellent graphic design, visual communication, and attention to detail
Ability to translate user needs into actionable design requirements and collaborate with engineering teams
Expert knowledge of design and prototyping tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma)
Strong portfolio showcasing interface design process and outcomes
Experience interacting with customers, stakeholders, or users to define design requirements
Ability to work on diverse projects with varying timelines
Proven experience designing novel UIs and data visualizations from the ground up, leveraging design systems and reusable assets
Willingness to learn from feedback and apply new techniques
Independent ability to research and apply leading design trends, data visualization, and interaction techniques
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to accommodate a hybrid schedule (60% onsite, 40% remote)
Preferred Experience
Experience performing literature reviews to inform system improvements
Experience with Agile or Scrum processes
Ability to contribute to proposals or publications
2+ years of hands-on experience creating and evaluating user experiences
Experience documenting design processes and presenting for technical or scientific audiences
Experience with multimodal interfaces, autonomous systems, human-robot interaction, or human/AI teaming (including Generative AI) and AR/MR/VR interfaces
Why Charles River?
We are a 100% employee-owned company that values collaboration and employee ownership. We offer competitive compensation plus bonuses, profit-sharing and a comprehensive benefits package, including employer-paid medical/dental/vision, life and disability insurance, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, gym allowance, paid time off, and a casual, flexible environment.
