The Public Safety Police Officer works under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor (Police Sergeants) for the assigned shift. In conjunction with and under the direction of the Police Sergeants, the Public Safety Police Officer is responsible for ensuring work is performed according to departmental policies and standards. This position makes informed decisions, within established departmental guidelines, to serve the Medical Center community and provide a safe and secure environment for all patients, visitors and employees of the BIDMC community. Essential Responsibilities
Responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, planning, scheduling and incident response. Maintains a cooperative relationship with the Police Sergeants and the Public Safety staff. Exercises independent judgement. Protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. May be assigned to uniformed patrol, traffic control, crime prevention, investigative work, juvenile work, or other specialized departmental activity. Work involves an element of personal danger in the pursuit of duties. Respond to the needs and inquiries of the BIDMC community, and strive for a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors by providing security of buildings, grounds, and parking areas throughout the Medical Center campus. Governed by state and federal laws and agency policy. Patrol grounds and parking areas observing for violators, safety hazards, and unauthorized persons; may issue parking warnings and take other corrective actions for minor violations. Monitor access control, respond to calls for service, document and respond to all unusual/routine occurrences as necessary. Provide feedback and input to Public Safety Supervisors to support improvement in key areas including, but not limited to, patient watches, crime statistics, security response times, restraint information. Promote crime prevention among security staff and implement proactive techniques to reduce crime, theft and loss of Medical Center property; work with other Medical Center members to create a safe and secure environment. Collaborate with key managers and directors to establish and facilitate a secure and safe environment. Work closely with the Safety Department, Radiation Safety, Psychiatry, Emergency Department and Media Services. Assist clinical staff with patient restraints and transports to and from campus, designated areas. Conduct investigations of incidents and write investigative reports. Attend court when required to successfully prosecute an arrest or summons. Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice preferred. Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity firearm license required. 1-3 years related work experience required. Regularly meet BIDMC firearms qualification and police/BIDMC training standards. Maintain qualifications per State/Federal requirements for CJIS access. Applicants must be a graduate of a Full-Time MA State Police Academy or Full-Time MPTC Academy or equivalent. At least 21 years old. Eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer per M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63; Massachusetts Class A License to Carry; Massachusetts Driver’s License. Must pass comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre-employment medical exam. Flexibility and availability to work any shift, including weekends/holidays, on short notice. Subject to frequent holdover and call back. Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access). Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
