Full-Time, Exempt Position Summary
The Commercial Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, structuring, and underwriting commercial credit requests for middle-market and small business clients. This role requires a strong analytical mindset, sound judgment, and a deep understanding of financial statements, lending practices, and risk management principles. The Commercial Underwriter partners closely with Relationship Managers and Portfolio Managers to support new and existing lending relationships while ensuring compliance with bank credit policies and regulatory guidelines. Responsibilities
Analyze and underwrite commercial loan requests, including working capital lines, term loans, equipment financing, real estate loans, and syndicated credits. Assess borrower financial performance through detailed review of financial statements, tax returns, cash flow projections, and collateral valuations. Prepare comprehensive credit approval packages with clear risk assessments and recommendations for approval or decline. Ensure loan structures are appropriate for borrower needs and within the bank’s risk appetite and policy parameters. Monitor and manage the ongoing credit quality of assigned portfolio, identifying early warning signs and recommending risk mitigation strategies. Partner with Relationship Managers to deliver timely, accurate, and client-focused underwriting support. Participate in due diligence, loan documentation review, and portfolio management activities. Maintain compliance with all internal credit policies, loan underwriting standards, and regulatory requirements. Contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting processes and risk assessment methodologies. Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required; MBA or formal credit training preferred. 3–7 years of experience in commercial credit analysis or underwriting within a bank or financial institution. Strong understanding of GAAP financials, commercial lending structures, and risk-based pricing. Experience underwriting diverse industries, including manufacturing, distribution, professional services, and real estate. Exceptional financial analysis and modeling skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present complex credit information clearly. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills. Collaborative and team-oriented with a client-first mindset. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and banking credit systems (e.g., Moody’s Risk Analyst, nCino, or similar).
