The Department of Public Works is recruiting two Building Inspector positions—Electrical Specialty, Combination / Certified I/II/III/Senior—in the Engineering Services Division, Code Inspection Section. These positions will provide inspection support at City facilities, including the Airport, Regional Wastewater Facility, and Central Service Yard. They may be located based on business need. Key Responsibilities
Conduct inspections of industrial, commercial, manufacturing, and facilities to ensure compliance with codes, regulations, ordinances, standards, and contract agreements; set up inspection schedules, gather information and evidence, and ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and safety regulations. Investigate building, construction, and land use changes in the field; gather factual data, conduct background investigations and research, prepare reports for enforcement. Provide technical assistance for development of codes and policies; generate written reports and enforcement orders noting deficiencies and submitting final documentation. Review plans and specifications for code compliance; assist in projects, prioritize deficiencies, and prepare timetables. Provide technical support for agencies and the public, including inputting data for general public access. Meet with architects, engineers, City officials, and contractors to discuss construction projects; perform other duties of a similar nature or level. Qualifications
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience (Building Inspector Combination): Four (4) years of construction experience equivalent to journey-level trades, including one (1) year of lead experience, or two (2) years of combination inspection experience for a public agency and two (2) years of construction-related experience. Specific requirements vary by certification level (I/II/III/Senior) with substitutions allowed as described in the original posting. Building Inspector Combination: Four (4) years of construction experience; one (1) year lead experience; or two (2) years of inspection experience for a public agency plus two (2) years of construction-related experience. Building Inspector Combination Certified I: Four (4) years of construction experience; or two (2) years of inspection experience for a public agency plus two (2) years of construction-related experience. Building Inspector Combination Certified II/III/Senior: Requires additional years of inspection experience and/or multiple certifications; Senior requires three (3) years of inspection experience and additional trades or certifications. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Valid California Driver’s License. Certification requirements increase with level (I/II/III/Senior) and may require maintaining valid commercial certifications in the employee’s specialty area and additional trades. Form 700 disclosure is required within 30 days of employment. A background investigation process will be conducted for eligible candidates.
