Responsibilities Clinical Care – The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA collaborates with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law and hospital regulations, policies, protocols and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care. Tasks include obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, reviewing orders and diagnostic/therapeutic tests, formulating and managing treatment plans. The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications within scope of practice and institutional/state guidelines. In some specialties, the NP/PA may have autonomous practice managing certain patient populations. The NP/PA may also function as first or second assistant on operative cases, within scope and prerequisites. Other clinical duties as required by departmental and operational goals, including emergency response within YNHHS parameters. Patient Education & Psychosocial Support – Educate patients/families on care and resources; collaborate with supervising physician on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and potential side effects. Provide psychosocial support as part of a multidisciplinary team. Information Management – Ensure documentation complies with hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information across all media from unauthorized access or disclosure. Quality Management – Demonstrate professionalism, ethics, and commitment to patient care; ensure compliance with healthcare regulatory requirements and standards. Professional Development – Engage in projects to maintain and advance competency; serve as a clinical resource or preceptor as appropriate; participate in safety reporting and quality improvement activities; support education and research as applicable. Qualifications Education Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Experience Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff and go through credentialing. This includes providing evidence of current competence and letters of reference during appointment. Licensure Active PA Certification by NCCPA, Connecticut State PA License, ACLS/BLS as required for position, with DEA license if indicated. Pediatric PALS/NRP certifications as indicated for neonatal care. Additional licensure/certifications may be required based on position.
