Summary The Lead Radiation Therapist provides leadership, training and guidance to lower-level staff, supports the Manager and performs complex and specialized radiation oncology work. Under the direction of the Manager, the Radiation Therapist Lead may develop training and provide orientation for new therapists and/or students, review and propose updates to procedure manuals and protocols, integrate new technical procedures and coordinate group projects. The incumbent also assists the Manager in identifying problems, recommending solutions and assisting in the improvement of technical and patient service programs. Therapists at this level are expected to have a thorough understanding and proficiency in the procedures performed in the Radiation Oncology Department. Responsible for daily patient care and education. Involve the patient and family in care decisions where appropriate. Maintain patient confidentiality and modesty; explain all treatment and imaging procedures. Review schedule to confirm patient load, imaging, and new patient starts. Monitor patient needs and responses to treatment; refer for appropriate management as needed. Use judgment in handling questions and calls; triage or resolve with appropriate follow-up. Assist the Manager in efficient operation of the clinical area and in developing daily work assignments for Radiation Therapist staff. Assess treatment rooms for operational equipment and quality checks. Provide floor supervision, monitor treatment units and CT availability, and ensure staff breaks and lunches. Assist in scheduling (OT, Weekend, On-call) as required by Manager. Perform quality assurance procedures and report deficiencies. Troubleshoot and correct minor machine faults; notify service providers for corrective action as guided by protocols. Order inventory and supplies as needed. Organize team response during equipment failures and communicate with patients and department areas. Work with Manager to develop new techniques and resolve clinical problems. Identify issues related to radiation treatment delivery and provide data-driven improvement recommendations to the Supervisor/Manager. Provide input to Manager for improved technical practices, procedures or programs; lead ongoing staff instruction on changes in practice. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment processes and lead instruction for new therapists and students; assist with annual competencies. Lead start-up QA measures, weekly chart checks, treatment delivery, image review, and EMR billing procedures. Oversee triage of emergent cases and coordinate scheduling with care team members. Ensure safe and accurate use of EMR and record-and-verify systems; instruct others in their proper use. Utilize QA program for all aspects of treatment, treatment delivery and patient care; document treatment variances accurately. Orient new staff and students to radiation oncology sites and ensure safety measures are observed. Assist with human resources duties including interviewing and training; resolve employee issues as needed. Maintain professional behavior, effective listening, and conflict resolution skills; lead regularly scheduled staff meetings and continuing education. Support management-focused career growth and maintain professional organization memberships; participate in committees, meetings, or research activities. Contribute to clinical instruction and evaluation of students assigned to the area. May participate on the on-call team and work flexible shifts as directed; coverage may be required on weekends and holidays. Adapt to contingency plans and rotate to other treatment areas as directed; may travel to network satellite clinics if needed. Other duties as assigned. Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
