Department of Transportation Overview

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire an Associate Steel Inspector (Assoc. SI) in the Office of Quality Assurance and Source Inspection (QASI). Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer, the Assoc. SI performs quality assurance source inspection of structural materials, fabricated steel components, field welding, precast concrete, and various material testing. Interprets codes, standards and specifications needed to perform inspection duties. The incumbent will prepare inspection reports while performing quality assurance inspections of structural materials at fabrication sites, suppliers and testing laboratories in accordance with the QASI Manual. The incumbent must have and maintain valid Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification. When operating a State vehicle, a valid driver’s license is required. Responsibilities

Perform quality assurance source inspection of structural materials, fabricated steel components, field welding, precast concrete, and related material testing in accordance with the QASI Manual. Interpret codes, standards and specifications required to perform inspection duties. Prepare inspection reports reflecting findings from inspections at fabrication sites, suppliers and testing laboratories. Qualifications

Must hold and maintain a valid Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification. Thorough knowledge of procedures used for the fabrication and erection of structural steel and related structural steel products. Strong familiarity with inspection and testing procedures used in the fabrication of structural steel. Working knowledge of standards and specifications used by Caltrans, such as ASTM, AWS, AASHTO, the California Standard Specifications, and the Standard Specifications for Welding Structural Steel. Knowledge and experience in nondestructive testing is desired. Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle. Possession of a current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification per the most recent American Welding Society QC-1 document. Department Information
