Overview
Position : Payroll Manager
Location : Davidson, NC
Reports To : Manager, HR Operations
FLSA : Exempt
The Payroll Manager serves as the strategic and operational leader of the company’s payroll function, ensuring accurate, compliant, and efficient processing across all employee groups. This role oversees both semi-monthly payroll for salaried employees and the weekly hourly payroll, managed by the payroll associate under your supervision. The Payroll Manager plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of payroll data, ensuring adherence to multi-state tax laws, and driving continuous process improvements within the payroll and accounting systems.
In this critical position, you will manage end-to-end payroll operations, including general ledger reconciliations, tax filings, and audit support, while collaborating closely with Human Resources and Finance to align payroll practices with organizational goals. This role demands exceptional attention to detail, a strong command of ADP Workforce Now and ADP Workforce Manager, and the ability to balance day-to-day accuracy with long-term process optimization.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and process the semi-monthly payroll for all salaried employees across multiple states, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
Oversee all hourly payroll operations, including processing, approving all changes, and acting as the primary backup for weekly processing.
Perform and manage all General Ledger (GL) activities, including account reconciliation and journal entries to ensure accurate data allocation.
Oversee all payroll tax filings, year-end closing processes, W-2 preparations, and audits.
Ensure full, continuous compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll laws, tax regulations, and special deductions (e.g., garnishments, union dues).
Monitor and audit payroll processes to identify and mitigate risks.
Identify opportunities for and lead process improvements, including new process or application implementations, to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.
Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors for all payroll-related matters.
Provide detailed payroll reports and analyses to the finance department for budgeting and forecasting.
Serve as the first point of contact for employees with payroll-related questions or issues, providing timely and professional assistance.
Develop, implement, and maintain new payroll policies, procedures, and controls to improve efficiency and ensure compliance.
Collaborate closely with the HR and Finance teams to streamline processes and address inter-departmental issues.
Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and data security for all employee payroll information.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree
in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related discipline; or equivalent professional experience (minimum 5 years in payroll management).
2–3 years of experience
in general ledger reconciliation, journal entry preparation, and payroll-related accounting.
Proficiency with
ADP Workforce Now
and
ADP Workforce Manager
required.
Advanced
Microsoft Excel
skills, including pivot tables, complex formulas, and data analysis.
Deep understanding of
multi-state payroll administration , including exempt/non-exempt classifications, tax compliance, garnishments, and union dues.
Demonstrated ability to
lead, mentor, and collaborate
across departments with a proactive and innovative approach.
