Overview

The electrolyte scientist will be responsible for developing and optimizing novel electrolyte formulations for sodium ion batteries incorporating fundamental design principles and inputs from advanced computational studies. This role requires an in-depth understanding of the relationships between the molecular constituents and an electrolyte’s overall functional properties, including electrochemical and chemical stabilities, transport properties, and temperature-dependent viscosity. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of lithium and sodium ion battery electrolytes and the considerations required to tailor these materials to specific battery chemistries to ensure compatibility and long-term performance. Industry Background:

Alsym Energy, Inc is a leading innovator in the rapidly changing field of battery energy storage. It is essential for the world to succeed in the transition to sustainable energy and batteries are at the core of the solution. The IEA predicts that 60% of CO2 emission reductions in 2030 will be directly related to batteries. Alsym’s advanced sodium ion technology enables the highest performing non-lithium-ion battery in the industry, based on its safe, sustainable and long-lasting energy storage solution. Responsibilities

Plan and execute experimental studies to develop and incorporate new liquid electrolytes into sodium ion battery chemistries, ensuring chemical compatibility and performance viability. Collaborate with computational scientists and implement new chemistries from concept through to detailed design and testing/demonstration. Work with a cross-functional team to understand and maximize battery performance by designing novel electrolytes and improving existing electrolyte formulations. Work in tandem with the electrode team to assess and enhance the electrochemical performance of new materials and develop mechanistic understanding based on interfacial properties. Advance the development of physicochemical analysis methods such as conductivity, transference number, diffusivity, voltammetry and thermal stability. Assemble, test and analyze data from coin and pouch cells to develop a thorough understanding of SEI formation and perform failure mode analysis. Collaborate with external partners to establish deep insights into fundamentals and pursue advanced solutions for next-generation technologies. Communicate technical findings, propose corrective actions and participate in the generation of intellectual property. Key Qualifications

PhD. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related discipline. 2+ years industry experience with electrolyte development for batteries. Hands-on experience in battery assembly and teardown techniques for coin/pouch cells. Deep knowledge of fundamental electrochemistry and an understanding of critical design/ performance trade-offs. Knowledge of common electrolyte systems, including common electrolyte salts, solvents, additives, and a good understanding of their role in device performance. Proficiency in electrochemical and chemical characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic cycling, GITT measurements, XRD, Raman, FTIR, etc. Previous work experience with moisture sensitive materials in a glovebox or dry room setup is a plus. Ability to advance multiple projects in a fast-paced and multidisciplinary environment. Compensation, Benefits, and Perks
