Saputo Inc. The Principal Scientist, R&D and Technical Services will provide strategic technical leadership for the cheese portfolio at Saputo USA. The person will be responsible for identification of new technologies to enhance Saputo’s cheese operations, drive yield and quality improvements through innovative approaches, and identify and develop products for the cheese category new to Saputo. This position serves as a technical voice to key stakeholders both internally and externally. The position is based in Tulare or Newman, CA.
How You Will Make Contributions That Matter
The Principal Scientist will be a thought leader that leads technical innovations and best practices within our cheese category to push forward process optimizations, equipment technologies, or product performance improvements. The focus will be on pasta filata type cheeses (mozzarella, string, provolone).
Collaborate across functions with product development, category management, operations, packaging, and sales.
Act as technical leader for commercial and Intellectual Property matters. Monitor industry IP and develop processes to protect internal trade secrets and assist with patent filings when applicable.
Maintain relationships with key ingredient suppliers to stay current with technologies and co-develop technologies for Saputo’s cheese category advantages.
Maintain relationships with cheese and dairy universities to stay informed on research opportunities and create partnerships that support strategic plans and innovation pipelines.
Provide technical assistance on quality issues and support the engineering team with capital project feasibility and implementation.
Build a consistent internal and external face for Saputo by engaging with internal teams, suppliers, customers, industry groups, and universities; leverage vendor and university resources.

You are best suited for the role if you…
Have a minimum of 5–10 years of R&D and technical service experience in the dairy/cheese industry or related dairy product development experience with management of technical operations.
Experience with development of pasta filata cheeses (mozzarella, string, provolone). Experience with cottage cheese and cheddar with pasta filata knowledge is acceptable; experience outside the US is desirable.
Hands-on knowledge of cheese types and industry-focused projects; combination of academic research and industry experience is acceptable.
Master’s degree in Dairy Science, Food Science, Dairy Manufacturing, Chemistry, or related field; PhD preferred.
Ability to develop and interpret technical information and lead projects efficiently.
Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to develop and lead teams to drive results.
Blend of technical and financial acumen to assess project feasibility and ROI.
Understanding of commercial dynamics that drive profitability and resource allocation.
Ability to collaborate and persuade across multiple functional areas to build consensus.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in MS Office.
Travel 50%+ of the time.
