DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Applied Humanities is a new department in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences that houses four majors: Bachelor of Arts degrees in Philosophy, Spanish, French and Francophone Studies, and Applied Humanities. The Department also houses several minor programs: in Spanish, Spanish Media Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Environmental Ethics, four additional minor programs in Philosophy, and a minor in Arts in Health/Narrative Medicine. The department also plans to launch a new minor in Spanish Healthcare Interpretation. The Applied Humanities major is an innovative new program that will launch in Fall 2026 as part of Cal Poly Humboldt’s polytechnic transformation. The major is designed with a multidisciplinary approach, reframing core Humanities competencies and knowledge in terms of contemporary workforce needs and student engagement. The three different emphasis areas of the major are intended to prepare students with professional assets, and include Technology and Human Values, Health Humanities and Social Responsibility. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES:

Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: HUM 101S Applied Humanities, HUM 205 Navigating Change, HUM 490S Applied Capstone, and other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion. RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS:

We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The Assistant Professor Classification annual salary range for this position is $74,652 - $158,688; the anticipated starting annual salary is $80,000 - 85,000. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in any humanities discipline or a related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must demonstrate the following: Record of training or experience in the field of any humanities discipline; Excellence in, or clear potential for, university-level teaching and creating a student-centered learning environment; Evidence of, or clear potential for, conducting and publishing original research on humanities topics in peer-reviewed journals; Demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches; Demonstrated ability to connect humanities knowledge to diverse career paths as evidenced through teaching, advising, programming, or scholarship; Demonstrated experience in community-engaged and experiential learning pedagogies, which may include leadership of internship placement programs and community-based learning opportunities; Demonstrated interest in program development and department-level leadership, with a willingness to take an active role in building and expanding new academic initiatives; Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse student populations and communities through teaching, research, and/or service; Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity addressing issues of concern facing students from diverse backgrounds in higher education; and Record of, or potential for, involving students in community engagement, research and scholarly activity. Preferred qualifications: Vision for the Applied Humanities program within the context of a polytechnic university that is oriented toward social justice; Teaching, research, or service experience that is aligned with current program pathways (Technology and Human Values, Health Humanities, Social Responsibility); Experience forging connections with new community partners and bridge-building with multiple organizations and departments; Experience advising and mentoring students who are pursuing an interdisciplinary course of study and/or promoting transdisciplinary and culturally responsive student research experiences; Ability to teach in one or more of the department’s languages (e.g., French, Spanish, or others); and Prior program- or department-level leadership and administrative experience is highly desired. Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Pursuant to CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy, hiring outside California is prohibited. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed. The CSU also prohibits hiring and retaining employees working permanently from a location outside the United States. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
