Role description Under immediate supervision, the Environmental Operations Assistant will work within the Airport Facilities Division's Environmental Operations section to support the development, implementation, and integration of materials management and environmental compliance practices across all Airport operations.
Support the Airport's zero waste-to-landfill strategy by assisting in the design, implementation, and tracking of source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting, recovery policies, programs, and projects.
Provide recommendations on Material Recovery Area (MRA) best practices, program enhancements, and requirements to teams such as Design, Building, and Construction.
Perform waste management audits and inspections at back-of-house kitchens, MRAs, and other locations on the campus.
Monitor waste management activities for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; support inspections, initiate corrective actions, and maintain documentation.
Support waste management assets and infrastructure by ensuring assets function properly.
Map assets using ArcGIS, track performance, and coordinate repairs or replacements with the waste hauler.
Deliver education, training, and outreach on environmental compliance requirements for materials management to SFO staff, visitors, and partners.
Research, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate environmental programs such as Green Business, Waste Management, Reuse and Recycle, Food Donation Programs, and other initiatives mandated by laws and SFO policies.
Lead certification processes and recruitment for SFO's Green Business Program.
Update and maintain databases and records; analyze data and prepare reports; develop data use strategies.
Prepare letters, memos, and reports to staff, the public, and relevant organizations to communicate information and data.
Perform duties as listed in the 5638 Environmental Assistant class specification.

Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
One (1) year of experience in planning, coordinating, implementing, analyzing, or evaluating qualifying programs or policies in environment, public health, community engagement, or related field.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.
One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours. Overtime hours are not included in this calculation. Applicants must meet minimum qualifications by the final filing date unless noted otherwise.
Special Conditions:
The minimum qualifications may differ from the standard for this position. They may include:
12 months of Environmental Zero Waste experience required
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license
Desirable Qualifications
Experience advising teams on waste management best practices, including three‑stream sorting systems.
Ability to coordinate cross-departmental projects with diverse stakeholders (contractors, facilities staff, custodial services, property managers, concessionaires, business owners).
Experience coordinating maintenance and replacement of waste management infrastructure.
Experience in data collection, tracking, visualization, reporting, and using tools like ArcGIS, Excel, PowerPoint or asset management systems to map and analyze infrastructure.
