Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN) provides free advice and legal representation to low-income individuals through volunteer attorneys, interpreters and other legal professionals. VLN is a private non-profit organization affiliated with the Hennepin County Bar Association. VLN’s mission is to protect and promote the basic needs of people in poverty through the power of legal volunteers. VLN envisions a society where everyone has equal access to the legal services essential for stability and well-being. We are currently seeking a passionate and collaborative Staff Attorney to join our legal team for a two-year term. Position Overview
VLN seeks a 1.0 FTE attorney to support its family law program. This unique role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of immigration and family law. The Staff Attorney will spend approximately half of their time representing clients and supporting pro bono attorneys handling Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) cases, and the other half on family law matters, also through direct representation and volunteer support. This position is ideal for an attorney who is bilingual in Spanish, has a strong commitment to immigrant and family justice, and enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, and community partners. Key Responsibilities
Represent children and youth in SIJS-related cases, primarily in predicate orders in state court; Supervise, staff and support legal services provided at family law clinics; Assist in screening and intake of potential clients; Recruit, develop and retain volunteers. Provide case-specific support and mentorship; Create and update substantive and procedural resources for volunteers, including developing and presenting CLEs and trainings; Regularly record data regarding services provided; Other duties as assigned or needed Qualifications
Licensed to practice law in Minnesota 1–5 years of relevant legal experience preferred, especially in family law Experience or strong interest in serving low-income communities, including immigrant children and families Ability to provide competent and compassionate service to clients and volunteers Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time Ability to work remotely and in person. Must have the ability to travel downtown Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required Compensation & Benefits
Salary $72,000 DOQ, plus benefits.
