Overview

Heavy Equipment Operator - Transmission at Pike Corporation. This is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. The role works at various locations and may travel to another state depending on customer demands.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
  • String overhead wire.
  • Set poles and anchors.
  • Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear.
  • Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Perform rigorous physical labor as required.
  • Understand proper use of company radio and operation of heavy equipment.
  • Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying; use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Receive and follow directions; learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit; be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Assist with installation and hookup of a single phase transformer; perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Understand equipment setup and grounding; work at heights and/or in confined spaces; observe minimum approach distances.
  • Check voltage on transformers; follow flag and tag procedures; install and remove a service.
  • Inspect rubber goods and PPE; determine when to wear personal protective equipment; use hand lines and Kellum grips when appropriate.
  • Able to identify different materials used in line work and work outside in inclement weather.
  • Willing to glove/work on high voltage transmission lines and perform related duties as required to complete the job.

Minimum Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience.
  • Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment; a CDL is preferred.
  • Able to travel long distances on short notice and work for extended periods in various locations as required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs and inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Willing to work overtime and outside of normal hours, including weekends and holidays, as required.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle and feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment

The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme conditions at construction sites. The noise level can be loud, and the work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
