Overview

Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in a wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control the flow and processing of sewage by performing the duties described below.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate the flow of sewage.
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and test results to determine load requirements.
  • Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control the flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintains a log of operations and records meter and gauge readings; collects sewage samples and conducts laboratory tests.
  • Operates and maintains power generating equipment to provide steam and electricity for the plant.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience: Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with common units of money and measurement.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; work with a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: COL
