Role: Waste Water Operator in South Charleston, WV.

About you and this role

What you will do in this role: ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Waste Treatment Plant in accordance with applicable regulations and permit requirements. Safely operate area equipment and machines, manage flow and treatment of wastewater, and monitor treatment effectiveness. Shift work, overtime and call-outs will be required as needed for safe and effective operation.

Responsibilities

  • The duties described below are indicative of the Waste Treatment Plant Operator role; other duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Provide continuous and effective operation of the Waste Treatment Plant by analyzing changes to flow and loading rates and making treatment adjustments as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for the city, WV Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP), and other agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
  • Demonstrate customer-focused service by being respectful and positive when dealing with internal and external customers.
  • Support operations by applying knowledge to solve a range of problems and organize materials and equipment for tasks.
  • Operate the plant in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Carry out activities safely in compliance with safety regulations and assist coworkers with safe handling of equipment; adhere to safety rules for confined spaces, trenching, etc.
  • Attend training to ensure personal safety and the safety of coworkers.
  • Ensure Waste Treatment Plant equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed.
  • Assist in investigation and follow-up of on-the-job accidents or injuries.
  • Foster teamwork through constructive listening and collaboration; take responsibility for performance by setting and communicating goals with management; promptly notify management of problems affecting goals.
  • Maintain all licenses, certifications, and continue learning new techniques related to the role.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience at a Class I-IV Wastewater Treatment Plant in West Virginia.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; no visa sponsorship is available for this position.

Preferred Skills

  • Associate’s degree or higher in a Science discipline.
  • West Virginia Class I-IV Wastewater Operator certification or have passed the WV Waste Water Operator Class I test.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience in an industrial environment.

  • Operational & Mechanical Proficiency: Safely operate wastewater treatment equipment and adjust treatment processes based on flow and loading.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Documentation: Maintain records for WVDEP and ensure permit and safety compliance.
  • Problem Solving & Troubleshooting: Analyze and resolve treatment or equipment issues.
  • Safety & Physical Endurance: Strong safety focus; able to work in physically demanding environments including confined spaces and extreme conditions.
  • Communication & Team Collaboration: Clear verbal and written communication; foster teamwork.
  • Time Management & Multitasking: Manage multiple priorities; respond to operational needs including overtime.
  • Technical & Digital Literacy: Quickly learn computer systems; use Word and Excel for reporting.

Physical Requirements: Able to meet the following physical demands with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Lift, push, and pull up to 55 lbs.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting and reaching; stand 50% of the time; walk extended periods; work at heights and in tight spaces.
  • Wear all required PPE, including respirator; work indoors/outdoors in all weather; tolerate noise and exposure to hazardous materials.
