Overview

Cardiac Anesthesia Providers support physicians by implementing anesthesia care plans under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists. They have advanced skills in managing patients with congenital heart disease in the perioperative setting and work exclusively within the cardiac anesthesia care team environment for cardiac surgery, catheterization lab procedures, electrophysiologic procedures, and anesthetics for cardiac imaging or noncardiac procedures. The position requires a premedical background or a baccalaureate degree and completion of a comprehensive didactic and clinical program at the graduate level. It includes training in delivery and maintenance of quality anesthesia care, advanced patient monitoring, and additional education in care for patients on ECMO, cardiopulmonary bypass, and ventricular assist devices. Work schedules are established to ensure optimal patient care and safe, efficient operation of Children\'s National.

Responsibilities

  • Collect preoperative data and perform physical examinations.
  • Manage supportive therapy such as intravenous fluids and blood products.
  • Administer cardiovascular drugs as part of anesthesia care.
  • Make anesthetic adjustments using intraoperative monitoring modalities.
  • Provide safe transition from the operating room to the recovery area.
  • Perform postoperative pain assessment and management.
  • Participate in administrative affairs, research, and clinical instruction.
  • Place venous, arterial, and other invasive catheters; secure and manage the airway; place, deliver, and manage regional anesthesia.
  • Maintain current knowledge through continuing medical education and participate in education of other practitioners as a mentor and role model.
  • Evaluate and apply literature and research findings to practice; design, conduct, or participate in research studies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Master\'s Degree. Must have completed a Master\'s Degree from a CAAHEP-accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant Program (Required) OR Master\'s Degree graduates prior to 2025 must have completed a master\'s degree approved nurse anesthesia program (24-36 months coursework and minimum 800 hours of clinical experience) (Required).
  • Required Skills/Knowledge: Pretesting and calibrating anesthesia equipment, collecting preoperative data, inserting venous/arterial/invasive catheters, delivering drugs for induction and maintenance of anesthesia, managing regional anesthesia, securing and managing the airway, administering intravenous fluids and blood products, intraoperative monitoring, and safe transition to recovery.
  • Required Licenses and Certifications: Anesthesiologist Assistant Upon Hire OR Registered Nurse Upon Hire AND Registered Nurse Anesthetist Upon Hire; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 30 Days (Required); Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Upon Hire; for anesthesia assistants, passing the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants; for nurse anesthetists, national certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists Upon Hire.
