Minimum Qualifications: Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of any General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program preferred. Basic experience, skills, and training with fundamental knowledge of cleaning, floor and restroom care, and equipment maintenance preferred. Desire to learn the trade and further knowledge through off-duty study and trade school/courses. Able to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding. Ability to lift and/or carry heavy objects (up to 35 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet). Must be willing to work in undesirable locations/conditions. Must be able to follow both written and oral instructions and carry out assignments on time. Able to work well with others. Assigned duties of Cherokee County Board of Education.

Goal: Maintain a healthy, safe, functional, and attractive environment for students, visitors, and employees through regular cleanliness and regular maintenance of school district facilities.

Representative Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accept direction from Head Custodian, Supervisor, or Administrator.
  • Perform custodial and preventative maintenance duties in all areas/locations of the District.
  • Clean woodwork, walls, furniture, and windows using approved equipment and cleaning products.
  • Mop, scrub, strip, wax, shampoo, vacuum, and spot-clean carpeting and floors, using manual and power equipment.
  • Climb and clean multilevel stairwells; climb a ladder or steps to complete tasks.
  • Perform physical tasks as required including: walking on even/uneven surfaces, standing/bending repeatedly for extended times.
  • Keep equipment and supplies in order; maintain an inventory of supplies; restock and request supplies when needed.
  • Understands, communicates, and follows oral and written instructions.
  • Work with approved cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents, or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment to maintain facilities.
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, activities, and events.
  • Move furnishings as required for routine and major cleaning.
  • Operate small equipment, common hand tools, and machinery with care in performing assigned cleaning tasks.
  • Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns to resolve issues and maintain a functioning educational environment.
  • Possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate and/or credential as may be required for this position.
  • Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, dependable, and punctual manner.
  • Participate in required training programs and on-the-job training to increase proficiency; and apply what is learned to the job.
  • Maintain security and accountability for keys, alarm codes, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and adhere to chain of command.
  • Act in a professional manner and maintain a professional attitude toward students, colleagues, administration, and the public.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical source information related to the job.
  • Ensure adherence to established safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
