Overview
An Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They ensure that electrical work meets relevant codes and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, repair, and maintain electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures
- Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints
- Inspect electrical components such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switches
- Troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components
- Use testing devices to identify problems and ensure functionality
- Follow National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building regulations
- Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems
- Install and maintain lighting systems
- Work with various power distribution systems
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an electrical apprenticeship program or vocational training
- State electrical license (requirements vary by location)
- Knowledge of electrical codes and safety regulations
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints
- Proficiency with hand and power tools
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various environments
- Strong communication skills
Working Conditions
- May work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions

- Possible irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and on-call duties

Career Path
Starting as an apprentice, electricians can advance to journeyman and then master electrician status, with opportunities to specialize in areas such as industrial systems, low voltage, or become electrical contractors or inspectors.
