Overview Peer Recovery Specialist position serving as a member of a team that responds to individuals experiencing non-life-threatening mental health and/or substance use disorder crises when dispatched through the 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline Call Center to adults in the Bergen and Passaic County communities on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year. You will offer non-clinical assistance and support beyond resolving the immediate crisis to stabilize and minimize the need for emergency service response, acting as a role model, mentor, and motivator to support consumers in their path to recovery and long-term success.

Location and Schedule Location: 1 Kalisa Way, Paramus, NJ 07652 and in the community. On-site; 4-10 hour days (1 weekend shift) following schedules below:

Schedule 1: Saturday Night – Wednesday Morning (8p–6a)

Schedule 2: Tuesday Night – Saturday Morning (10p–8a)

Job Summary As a Peer Recovery Specialist, you will be part of a team that responds to individuals in crisis via the 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline Center, focusing on adults in Bergen and Passaic Counties. You will apply your recovery journey to provide non-clinical support to stabilize the situation and reduce the need for emergency services, serving as a model, mentor, and motivator for long-term recovery.

What You Will Do

Respond to adults in Bergen and/or Passaic County upon dispatch by the 988 Lifeline, providing timely crisis intervention and de-escalation for non-life-threatening mental health and/or SUD crises

Coordinate care with a Crisis Response Worker, link to ongoing community mental health and/or SUD services, and initiate follow-up contacts to divert further crises

Provide transportation to crisis stabilization and receiving centers, hospital emergency rooms, or community behavioral health centers when safe and voluntary

Refer individuals to services to mitigate future crises by assessing/addressing immediate needs

Document consumer progress in assigned databases with entries authenticated and dated

Work with administrative staff to document services for billing and regulatory standards; collect insurance and demographic information

Conduct follow-up visits to ensure required level of care; research and coordinate resources and provide psychoeducation

Collaborate with family members, friends, or loved ones to support the individual in crisis

Identify gaps in service and collaborate to resolve them

What We Are Looking For

Lived experience with 2 years of continuous recovery from a serious mental illness or substance use disorder

At least 2 years of field experience working in the community with consumers

Certification by at least one of: Addiction Professional Certification Board, Mental Health Association in New Jersey, Association for Addiction Professionals, Certified Wellness Coach, Community Mental Health Associate

Valid driver’s license and insurable under Agency’s automobile policy
