Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will be responsible for providing expert clinical leadership to the nursing staff on 5A Ortho/Trauma Surgical and on 5C Adult Med/Surg, Transplant, and GI. 5A is a fast-paced unit with 32 acute care beds, specializing in adult Orthopaedic procedures, traumatic injuries including burn, and acute and moderate care surgical patients. The surgical patient population can include general surgery, urology, colorectal, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and more. 5C is a 32-bed general care surgical unit for transplant, gastrointestinal and urology surgery patients. Common procedures on 5C include kidney, pancreas/kidney, and liver transplants, small bowel resections, Whipple procedure, cystectomy and nephrectomy. Patient population ranges from young adult to elderly. The CNS is the clinical leader for a program or area of nursing practice within Michigan Medicine. The role requires clinical expertise, evidence-based practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring, and change leadership to advance nursing practice and professional development. The CNS works with the Clinical Nursing Director on the unit and with the ACNO for 5A and 5C, coordinating and guiding clinical activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. The CNS collaborates with the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies and maintains current professional knowledge to contribute to nursing practice advancement at the unit/system, local, state and/or national and international levels. Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care Serve as a reliable source of information on evidence-based, cost-effective, safe nursing practices. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to integrate nursing perspective into the patient/family care plan. Identify and prioritize nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families, including assessment data synthesis and advanced interventions. Conduct comprehensive wellness and illness assessments using established or innovative evidence-based techniques. Initiate and plan care conferences or programs for patients or populations; call for interdisciplinary conferences when barriers or length of stay are evident. Assist teams to establish working goals, targets, and measures of progress in care plans. Design and evaluate educational programs for patients, families, and groups. Establish methods to evaluate nursing interventions at multiple levels and document outcomes. Evaluate the financial and human resource impact of nursing interventions. Nursing/Nursing Practice Collaborate to resolve issues related to patient care, policies, and resources. Create and revise nursing policies and procedures using evidence-based information to achieve outcomes. Identify facilitators and barriers affecting patient outcomes. Lead clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives for a unit or program. Collaborate with nurses to develop practice environments that support shared decision-making. Support staff in developing critical thinking and clinical judgment through rounds and bedside consultation. Foster a learning-oriented nursing environment with ownership and accountability. Collaborate on content and design of orientation and clinical competency programs. Mentor nurses to acquire new skills, develop careers, and incorporate evidence into practice. Model advanced communication and therapeutic interventions in patient/family assessments and high-performance team conversations. Provide input for staff evaluation and formal/informal education for nurses and students. Lead nursing research activities and evaluate daily work processes to insert evidence and remove low-value activities. Analyze quality data to identify trends for quality improvement and education needs. Organization/System Leadership Consult with other units to improve care and lead initiatives to enhance clinical nursing practice. Develop, pilot, evaluate, and incorporate innovative models of practice across the continuum of care. Design and evaluate programs aligned with organizational strategy, regulatory requirements, and nursing standards. Identify and analyze data for program design and outcome measurement. Participate in product and equipment evaluation and adoption. Advance nursing practice through professional organizations, publications, and presentations. Demonstrate high-performance team development in rounds, grand rounds, huddles, and care conferences. Qualifications

Completion of an accredited graduate-level Clinical Nurse Specialist program. Master’s degree in nursing with a clinical focus is required. Adult or Family population-focused national CNS certification recognized by NCSBN. Current RN licensure to practice nursing and CNS certification in the State of Michigan is required. Recent experience in assessing, treating and evaluating patients typically cared for in the clinical area of hire in a tertiary care environment, including devices and pharmacologic treatment modalities, is required. Strong teaching skills and the ability to develop educational materials are desired. Experience leading complex change projects in an academic environment is desired. Analytical skills to gather data and recommend solutions are desired. Ability to apply evidence-based knowledge through protocols and outcomes measurement is desired. Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement and keystone initiatives is desired. Experience as principal or co-investigator on research projects is desired. Experience implementing unit-level service initiatives is desired. Professional writing and publication experience is desired. Eligible for appointment with the School of Nursing is desired.
