Stantec is seeking a consulting biologist with at least 15 years of experience to join our southern California Ecosystems Group by operating out of our Santa Barbara, or San Diego, California offices. We welcome a talented and collaborative team member with demonstrable experience in southern California and elsewhere. As a Principal-level Biologist with Stantec, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, and wider multidisciplinary team. This will be a leadership role providing direction and mentorship for junior team members, project management, and responsibility for driving business development. This position will primarily entail office work but may include limited opportunities for field work. Responsibilities
Contribute to and manage multi-disciplinary project teams across sectors including renewable energy, and electric and gas transmission and distribution projects, as well as natural resource planning and management projects. Oversee and provide expertise in field biology, regulatory strategy, CEQA/NEPA analysis, and permitting strategy. Leverage botanical, wetland, or wildlife expertise, regulatory permitting experience, and proven success in project and client management. Coordinate extensively with clients, resource agencies, and environmental and technical staff. Qualifications
Experience on utility-related biological compliance projects, particularly with SDG&E, is highly desirable. Experience managing complex projects/programs in southern California as a Project Manager for multidisciplinary teams. Familiarity with SDG&E’s environmental permitting processes, biological monitoring protocols, and utility corridor operations is a strong asset. Candidates with prior consulting or coordination experience involving SDG&E projects are encouraged to apply. Special consideration for applicants who have supported SDG&E’s Habitat Conservation Planning and mitigation strategies, or CPUC-regulated initiatives. Your Capabilities and Credentials
Skills Biologist or natural resources management specialist with minimum 15 years of related experience in business development, project management, technical execution, and mentorship. Strong communication with clients, engineers, scientists, regulators, and the public. Disciplined, results-focused project execution with leadership in technical performance. Ability to drive ideas, innovation, and collaborative regional efforts. Proficiency in HSE policies and client-specific training where applicable. Experience reviewing and analyzing scientific data, maps, and drawings with strong analytical and decision-making skills. Extensive knowledge of southern California flora, fauna, and vegetative communities; experience elsewhere is a plus. Experience in floristic botanical surveys, reconnaissance wildlife surveys, and species-specific protocol surveys (listed species experience a plus). Experience in preparing regulatory documentation and CEQA/NEPA materials. Knowledge of environmental regulations (CEQA/NEPA, FESA/CESA, MBTA/BGEPA, CWA, Porter-Cologne Act, FGC, CCA/LCPs). Experience with regulatory permits such as CWA 404/401, WDRs, LSAAs, ITPs. Experience leading environmental permitting of energy facilities, pipelines, and linear infrastructure in the western U.S. Experience in construction project compliance, monitoring, training, and post-construction reporting. Proficiency with GPS/GIS for data collection and mapping. California Scientific Collecting Permit or similar permits a plus; wetland delineation training a plus. Valid driver’s license; ability to travel occasionally. OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour certification a plus. Medical/drug screening may be required for some projects. Education and Experience
BS in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field; MS preferred; minimum 15 years of experience. Work Environment and Travel

Final compensation is based on education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Some roles may be bonus eligible.
