About this position:
The overall function of this position is managing a District Construction Unit, such as directing and supervising highway and bridge construction, survey activities, contract administration, quality assurance, material management and associated functions of construction unit including supervising employees in the Project Engineer's Office, engaged in construction work with DOTD. This position reports directly to the Engineer 7/District Area Engineer.
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:
Two years of licensed engineering experience; or
Six years of professional engineering experience. EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS: A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience. NOTES: Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license will be accepted as professional level engineering experience. Job Duties: Plans, directs and coordinates all activities for one or more construction units which provide supervision of construction projects, inspection, sampling, testing, and survey activities for all types of major complex highway and bridge construction projects. Supervises and trains a staff of engineers and engineering technicians by planning, directing and coordinating all engineering activities for one or more construction units. Consults with contractors on a daily basis on issues such as project progress, change orders, phasing of work and traffic control. Approves and monitors erosion control plans. Monitors hazardous waste removal. Makes recommendations for payment of utility relocation, and railroad invoices. Develops and writes change order to solve complex problems such as design errors, construction problems, and environmental concerns. Interacts with private citizens, elected and public officials to resolve conflicts and complaints concerning rights-of-way, DOTD construction projects, and traffic problems. Administers permits approved by the DOTD permit section. Ensures that work being done by permit complies with the permit that was issued.
