Issaquah School District
The Data Engineer collaborates with departments across the Issaquah School District to design, build, and maintain systems that organize and manage data used for decision-making, reporting, and operational efficiency. This includes structuring databases, writing queries to retrieve information, and developing tools that support data accuracy and accessibility.
The Data Engineer provides support for staff using data systems and contributes to projects involving application development and automation using C# within the Microsoft ecosystem. The Data Engineer also serves as a team lead on districtwide data initiatives, guiding colleagues and supporting collaborative project work to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Essential Functions:
Data Architecture & Integration: Lead the design of data models, warehousing, and cross-system integration strategies. Design and manage automated data pipelines between internal and third-party systems. Own Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) architecture and performance tuning using APIs, SQL, and scripting (C#, Python, PowerShell). Data Governance & Quality: Define data standards, naming conventions, and stewardship responsibilities. Implement data validation and cleansing procedures to ensure high-quality, reliable data. Maintain a robust, organized data warehouse environment that breaks down silos and increases access to actionable information. Data Visualization & Insights: Translate data into engaging dashboards and visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Excel. Develop actionable insights and self-service BI capabilities for schools and departments. Help staff understand, interpret, and use data to inform decisions by tailoring dashboards and visualizations to their expressed needs. Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with schools, departments, and district leaders to extract visualization and reporting requirements that inform dashboard and system design. Serve as a thought partner in designing data-informed approaches to challenges in student success, resource allocation, and system performance. Requirements:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field or five years' experience as an Information Systems Analyst or other Information Science related field. EXPERIENCE: 3 – 5 years of experience in data integration, API development, or data engineering. Proven experience creating interactive dashboards and reports for non-technical users. TECHNICAL PROFICIENCIES: API integration, scripting, and SQL, Data modeling and design, Data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), Data warehousing and ETL concepts, Microsoft ecosystem (SharePoint, Excel, Azure Data Services, etc.) Preferred Skills:
Excellent communication and storytelling abilities, with a knack for making data understandable and actionable. Strong project management skills; ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities. Commitment to using data for equity, student success, and systemic improvement. Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative projects and guide the work of others without direct supervisory authority.
